2014: bang, meh, fizzle


2014 started with a Bang, went a bit meh in the middle and then fizzled out.

The Bang
The Spine Race. This time last year I was bricking it. I’d spent a lot of time and energy preparing and fine-tuning my kit. I was confident that (barring apocalyptic weather) I could do the route, but I wasn’t sure I could do it inside the 7 day time limit.

My goals were:
1) stay safe,
2) have fun
3) jog into Kirk Yetholm in the early hours of Saturday morning in the style of Mick Cooper (the 2013 2nd place finisher).

1) I definitely managed. 2) I managed, with the exception of
Stage 3, from Hawes to Middleton, which was a bit of a struggle. 3) I failed. I didn’t jog, I walked. And also it wasn’t Saturday morning, it was Friday evening! Strolling into Kirk Yetholm, to what felt like a huge waiting crowd, in time for last orders was one of the best things I’ve ever done. With the 2015 race approaching I’m spending lots of time reminiscing about it. I’ll leave an overemotional ode to the Spine to another day...


The meh in the middle
Post Spine the question was ‘what next?’. In the longer term I’m thinking about one of the Arctic ultras, and maybe Tor de Geants. But for this year the focus was to ‘
get less slow’, with a, somewhat optimistic, vague idea of getting fast enough to have a hope of finishing Spartathlon. Initially with weekly speed work and hill repeats I was making progress, and was going to aim at 110 miles in the Gloucester 24 hour track race in June. An incident involving a suitcase on wheels put pay to that. Instead I ground out a 50 mile PB of 9.29 (1 minute inside the Spartathlon 50 mile cut-off...) and stopped. The suitcase induced niggles finally cleared up when I upped my training in preparation for T184. Objectively T184 was a success. I finished comfortably inside the time limit. But I’d set off with bolder goals and ended up feeling a bit underwhelmed.


The fizzle
Post T184 I didn’t do much. Earlier in the year I’d thought about having another go at a 24 hour track race (Barcelona in December). But in the end I decided my body and head both needed a rest. I still ran most days, but for my sanity rather than training. Event wise I jogged Round Rotherham (just dipping under 11 hours again thanks to a last minute ‘sprint’) and did a couple of mini Mountain Marathons with very mixed results. The Dark & White Edale one went well; on ‘home territory’ with the clag down I finished 3rd LV40 thanks to cunning route choice and some luck in finding tricky checkpoints. The Peak Raid 3 from Crowden was a different story; last LV40 thanks to crap route choice, crap navigation and crap running.

Gear review: Ultimate Direction Fastpack 20l

For the past couple of years I’ve been using either the first generation Salomon S-Lab 12 litre or the Ultimate Direction PB for non-multi-day ultras. They feel less cumbersome than traditional packs and the multiple pockets make organising gear easier. And the smaller capacity helps reign in my ‘everything but the kitchen sink’ packing tendencies. So, as a bit of a gear junkie, I was looking forward to the Fastpack becoming available in the UK (Ultimate Direction did a good job of creating online buzz...). In particular I thought it might be good for the T184. In the end it didn’t hit the shops here until October. 24 hours later (thanks to the ULTRAmarathonRunning Store’s speedy dispatch and delivery) I had one sat on my doorstep.

So far I’ve tested it out on two runs. A half-day (carrying waterproof jacket & trousers, fleece, hat & gloves, survival bag, head-torch, water and snacks) and an overnight trip (all of the above plus bivy bag, sleeping bag & mat and more food). I also tried a quick run around the block with a winter weight sleeping bag and mat.

For the half-day outing, the Fastpack felt a bit like driving a blingy 4 by 4 to the corner-shop (thankfully I didn’t encounter any hard-core fell-runners). With a 36 inch chest (thanks to a large rib-cage...) I’m towards the upper-end of the advertised size range for S/M (24-40 inches). However even with the straps tightened almost completely the top of the pack moved around a fair bit. Fiddling around with the level of the chest straps reduced the movement, but didn’t eliminate it completely. It was a bit irritating and I’d worry about chafing over a full day. Fit when part-loaded is likely to be an issue for anyone smaller built than me (which is most female runners, and some men too). This run probably wasn’t a fair test for the pack; it’s not what it’s designed for. But, on the other hand, an OMM 20l sack, for instance, would handle a ‘part-load’ far better.


The Fastpack came into its own on the overnight trip. The seamless back is really comfy, no chafing and it sat evenly across my back, regardless of how I stuffed things into it. This wasn’t a long enough outing to really put comfort levels to the test, but (even without sudocrem...) there was no chafing and the wide shoulder straps spread the weight, avoiding a sore collar bone.

I used the stretch side pockets for two 750ml water bottles. Side pockets are my preferred place for carrying water bottles (it’s even where I put them in my S-Lab). These ones are secure and easy to access, and would even hold bigger bottles. My waterproofs went in the stretch back pocket. Good for keeping them separate from other gear, and far more secure then stuffing them in a rear bungy. Car keys went in the small zip pocket on the front straps and snacks into the larger pockets. For any trip which needs 20l total capacity, I’ll usually have a fair amount of stuff (mobile phone, sunglasses, head-torch,...) which I want close to hand. Usually it goes in either a front pack or the lid pocket, but with the Fastpack it had to go in the main compartment with everything else. The larger front pockets were big enough to hold some of this stuff, but in the absence of zips I didn’t trust them.


Thanks to the roll down top, it is possible to get a lot more than 20l of kit in (possibly closer to 30). I’ve managed to fit Winter weekend camping gear in, including a heavier weight sleeping bag and mat. However then it was very top heavy and it felt like I was at risk of toppling over backwards.


In summary: a good piece of kit for multi-day trips outside Winter, but not as adaptable as other similar size packs. It has some really nice features (the large stretch back pocket is great for storing waterproofs) but the lack of secure small pockets is annoying. Fit when part-loaded may be an issue if you’re slim built. It’s worth considering if you like (and can afford...) to have kit for all occasions. But an OMM 20 or 25l sack, or similar, with a front pack will do the same job cheaper, and is more adaptable.

On being a gear junkie

I’m a bit of a gear junkie. I like buying and using new running gear, and finding kit which works well for me. But, judging by some of the discussion on the Ultra Running Community Facebook page, this makes me a bit odd. A profligate fool, even.

I know fancy, or even decent, gear isn’t going to make me run faster. I ran my marathon PB (nearly 20 years ago, when I was a penny-less PhD student) wearing a pair of ‘trainers’ from a high street shoe shop, some M&S cotton socks, a huge 99p cotton T-shirt from New Look and a pair of purple shorts from the bargain bin at the local running shop. But I’m lucky enough (thanks to a job which kicks my arse for half the year) to have some disposable income, so why not spend it on things which make me happy and running a more pleasant experience? For multi-day mountain races decent kit is a necessity, but even for tamer events, how much is finishing in comfort, rather than cold and chafed to bits, worth?

There’s an argument that it’s better to spend cash on experiences than on kit. I’m the last person who need to be convinced of the value of experiences. Up until recently our mortgage payments were only slightly more than our holiday budget... However I’m a bit wary of ‘big-ticket’ races. Any ‘big’ race involves an investment of time and energy for training. Throw in a substantial financial cost and DNFing becomes even more painful. Some races require new kit. But unless it’s really niche stuff you can use it again and again. And if you don’t, you can usually eBay it and recoup a substantial fraction of the cost.

I don’t rush out and buy new stuff for the sake of it. I like ‘things which work’ more than I like new shiny things (unlike the couple at this year’s Round Rotherham who looked like they were taking part in a Killian and Emelie impersonation competition). My favourite medium-weight long-sleeved tops are a couple of Men’s Raidlight Stretch Raider tops that I picked up in a sale 7 or 8 years ago. They’re looking a bit battered, and I’ve had to mend some small holes, but they still do their job well.

While I do spend a fair bit on kit, I like to make my cash go as far as possible. I rarely pay full RRP for anything, unless I absolutely have to. For instance to replace something which has broken and is needed for a specific race. But I don’t just buy from whatever random online shop is cheapest. Good customer service (and supporting business who’re doing a good job) is worth more than saving a couple of quid. I do sometimes have to restrain myself from buying things from SportPursuit because they’re cheap and/or purple and/or might come in useful one day though.

T184: kit


Overall my plan was to try to not carry too much weight, while taking enough clothes and sleeping equipment to avoid getting too cold. (I get cold fairly easily, especially on multi-day events if I’m moving slowly). I wasn’t completely successful on the later count, but would have struggled to run with a heavier pack.

I’m a bit of a gear junkie, so already had all of the kit apart from the lightweight sleeping bag and the front pack.


Feet

My feet did blister, but not too badly. Given the distance, pack weight and wet grass, avoiding blisters was difficult (unless your feet are bomb proof). My feet get sweaty, so in hot weather SealSkinz create more problems than they solve.


Sleeping
Terra Nova Discovery light bivy bag
A lightweight hoop-less bivy. Got cheap (significantly less than RRP at least) from Field and Trek. Not a good option in hot wet weather (as I found out in July...): you’ve got a choice between getting drenched by rain or drenched by condensation. But it was fine for this years T184 weather. You can only lie out flat in it if you’re short though.

PHD racer down sleeping bag, short
This was one of PHD’s Summer Special’s. The temperatures at night were in the single digits and this (+ the liner below) wasn’t warm enough for me. It became apparent a couple of days before that it was going to be cold at night, for late August at least. So I should have taken my RAB neutrino 400 instead. A lightweight synthetic bag (if such a thing exists...) might be a better choice if the weather is very wet, and you’re not carrying a tent or hooped bivy.

I didn’t bother with a sleeping mat. I don’t mind sleeping on hard/rough surfaces and in August the ground temperature is high enough that heat loss in that direction isn’t a problem. And my rucksack had one built in if I’d needed it.

I had difficulty sleeping. But (apart from the sleeping bag temperature issue) the problem was my head not my kit.


Misc

OMM Adventure Light 20 litre sack and Salomon Custom Front Pocket
An old pack that I used to use for events with long kit lists (e.g. Fellsman and UTMB) in the days pre race vests. Was comfy and had a little bit of room to spare. The one plus side of having broad shoulders is that unisex packs fit me OK. The only problem was that it was on its last legs, which I only noticed as I was on my way down to London. Thankfully my last minute bodge job repairs with super glue and duck tape held...
A front pack is really useful for carrying snacks, phone, maps etc. In the past I’ve used a OMM front pack with a larger OMM Jirishanca sack. But that bounced around too much with the smaller sack, so I got a Salomon one, and sewed/glued the connecting bits to my sack. The side pockets were useful for additional water carrying capacity for stage 1, and the top strap handy for stashing the maps.


Petzl Myo RXP
Workhorse headtorch. Good compromise between brightness, weight and battery life. A decent head torch is useful for spotting signs.

Petzl e-lite

2 x Camelbak 750ml bottle

2 x Ultimate Direction 420ml Body Bottle
For extra capacity during stage 1 (when water sources were sparse).

Took this as a backup to the official maps, in case I lost them or needed to look up a grid reference. In retrospect 1:25 000 scale OS maps would have been useful for the start and finish.
Didn’t take a GPS. I did get lost once, but the time I lost then was probably off-set by the weight saved and the time I’d have wasted checking a GPS unnecessarily if I’d had one.


Blister kit
Swiss credit card, moleskin, k-tape, wound dressing, zinc oxide tape, plasters, wipes, bandage (the last 3 were just to satisfy the compulsory kit).

Suunto Ambit
On 1 minute recording (which gave ~60 hours battery life), so I knew roughly how far I’d gone and could check my position if necessary. Unfortunately the one time it was necessary was after the battery had run out...

Cheap, robust and long battery life, so no need to carry a charger.

Three: one with podcasts, one with happy music and one with angry music. Only used the happy music one (I was still spectacularly miserable/bad tempered for a lot of the final 24 hours...).

I’m never particularly fussed about hot food, and struggle to eat big meals when running. So I didn’t take a stove and instead ate roughly 100 calories an hour of sweet and savoury snacks, plus (to everyone else’s bemusement...) cold pizza at the checkpoints. To minimise weight I took the minimum number of calories allowed, knowing that if it took longer than 3 days (which it did, just) I’d go hungry. This worked fairly well, apart from the chopped up Hula Hoops. If I was doing it again I’d take ~500 calories more of sweet stuff (which is great for an instant energy boost when sleep-deprived).



Clothes

Had planned to save weight by wearing a thin long-sleeved top on the first day and then just putting layers on top of it. But the 1st day was hot enough that I drenched it with sweat and had to switch to the Raidlight top that night. It dried off stuffed in the bungy cord on the back of my rucksack on day 2 and I used it again on day 3.

Wore at checkpoints and over night. In retrospect an OMM Rotor smock (+ possibly a lightweight windproof) would have been better.

I’d original planned to take lighter Montane minimus waterproofs, but switched to heavier weight ones because of the weather forecast. Very glad I did. This was the first time I’d worn this particular pair of over-trousers (my old pair died on the Spine race after 4 years of heavy use). The new cut was different, and I got annoyed by how baggy they were. I’ve since given them to the OH and got another pair a size smaller which seem to be OK.

Things which went right (ish)

Feet
My feet blistered, in particular the ball of my right foot, which is my usual problem area. But not too badly. And the Spine race medics’ recommended treatment (dry, drain, pad, tape) stopped the main blister spreading. Unlike in my first 100 where, with an ‘ignore it and hope for the best’ strategy, I lost all of the skin from the balls of both feet and most of my toes (the skin off them that is, not the actual toes). My feet were occasionally painful, but were never a limiting factor.

Food
I took a calculated risk and only took the minimum 8000 calories, knowing that I’d run out of food if it took me more than 3 days. I finished almost bang-on 3 days with a couple of hundred calories of Hula Hoops left and a very rumbly tummy. If I was doing it again I’d take less Hula Hoops (I suspect taking them out of their packets to chop them up altered their taste/texture) and more caffeinated gels. But overall my strategy of drip-feeding 100 calories an hour and not taking a Jetboil for hot food worked. A hot meal and a coffee at the start of the 3rd night would have been nice, but not nice enough to make it worth lugging a stove around.

Training (in particular the 3 week taper)
The week leading into the race, I had bags of energy and was running really well. And getting to 100 miles with a 8 kg rucksack in less than 30 hours (2 of which were spent failing to sleep) really isn’t bad going for me. Not long ago I’d have been happy to finish a ‘normal’ 100 in that time.



Things which didn’t go too badly

Kit
For the first time ever I decided to go fairly minimalist on the kit front. On the grounds that if my pack weighed much more than 8 kg I wouldn’t be able to run at all, and I wanted to try and do a little bit better than just finishing inside the time limit. Plus if things went wrong I’d never be too far from civilisation.

Clothes I got more or less right. When cold nights were forecast a couple of days beforehand, I switched to heavier duty hat, gloves, base layer and waterproofs, which was a good move. I also added a thermolite sleeping bag liner. This was my one kit mistake, I should have switched my super-lightweight PHD sleeping bag (bought specially...) for my heavier RAB neutrino.

I didn’t take a handheld GPS, to save weight and also faffing time. While the battery on my Suunto Ambit lasted (up to 60 hours) it would tell me where I was if I went off course. I made two non-negligible navigation errors. One in the penultimate stage which cost me 5-10 minutes. And a bigger one in the last stage (after the battery on my Ambit had run out...) which cost me much longer, maybe half an hour I’m guessing. But I think not taking a GPS was still the right decision. 1:25 000 maps of trickier sections would in principle have been a good idea, but beforehand it was difficult to guess which sections would be problematic.

I coveted Lee B’s poles when he sped past and away from me on day 3. But I’m not very good at using them on the flat, and the benefits probably wouldn’t have outweighed the extra weight.



Things which didn’t go well

Sleep
Not a surprise this one. I’m not very good at sleeping. In everyday life my usual technique is to read until I can’t keep my eyes open. Which doesn’t really work in a race. I’d never had problems running through a single night before, and got through 2 days and 1 night of GUCR without feeling sleepy at all. Therefore my plan was to run through the 1st night and grab a couple of hours sleep on the 2nd night, when hopefully I’d have no problems dropping off. However I started feeling tired early in the first evening, but couldn’t sleep at all that night. The low temperature and the sleepless night beforehand didn’t help, but can’t be blamed entirely.

Now I’ve sorted out my stomach and feet, sleep is my limiting factor in multi-day races and I really need to do something about this (before the Thames Ring next year...).

Run-walk strategy
Like at GUCR my run-walk strategy worked really well up until the point that it failed, and then it failed catastrophically. I kept a 25:5 routine going through the first day and then switched to 10:5 throughout the first night and second day, with a couple of extended walks into checkpoints. After that I had a couple of half hearted attempts at running which lasted no more than a couple of minutes. At the time I convinced myself that walking steadily was better/faster than mixing slow running and slow walking. However I’d probably have finished several hours faster if I’d managed a bit of running. I was certainly physically capable of doing it as I jogged into the finish without any problems (and told the people watching that I should have done more running...). So it’s a question of working out how to make my brain make my body run. It’s not exactly something I can practice in training, since the issue only kicks in after 30+ hours of running. Maybe just switching down again to 5:5? or 5:10 even?

Goals
My 60 hour finishing goal was completely unrealistic. Even if everything had gone perfectly I don’t think I could have made it (mainly due to the route getting more rural beyond Oxford). And once this became clear I switched far too quickly to ‘just finish’ mode. Most of the people who finished close to me were moving slowly because they were injured. I was moving slowly because I couldn’t be arsed to move any faster. If I’d pushed harder through the 3rd day and night I could have gone sub-70. Lesson learnt: be very cautious when setting goals for races that are being run for the first time.

While I made my ‘top 3 women’ goal comfortably (just by finishing...), in retrospect this wasn’t a good goal. I wasted far too much energy obsessing about the whereabouts of the other women, something I had no control over. Being (very unexpectedly) in 3rd place by checkpoint 2 probably contributed to this. I’m used to the satisfaction of working my way through the field in the 2nd half of races rather than being chased. Lesson learnt: don’t focus on position until the end is ‘in sight’.


The main thing that’s bugging me is how under-whelmed I still feel about my finish. I don’t really understand why. Yes, I was slower than I wanted to be. But I finished a race with a huge DNF rate comfortably. Yes, 8th place was further in front of me than the cut-off was behind. But the 8 people in front were all much faster runners than me, and being at the ‘front of the back pack’ is actually not a bad result for me.

Maybe coming up with finishing time and place goals was a mistake and I should switch back to my old ‘only goal is to finish’ approach. After all this is a hobby (one I’ll never by particularly good at in absolute terms) and I’m supposed to enjoy it. On the other hand I like a challenge, and post-Spine ‘just finishing’ most races isn’t a challenge any more. And for some of the races I’d like to do (e.g. the Viking Way) I’m going to have to push the pace throughout to make the cut-offs.

Another possibility is that the race just finished at a point where I was feeling pretty low, due to sleep-deprivation and lack of food. I felt pretty similar three days into the Spine. So maybe the solution is to not enter races which (only...) take three days!




T184: the race

The day before
I’d booked a cheap advance 1st class ticket down to London, hoping for a relaxing afternoon. Thanks to a jam on the M1, I ended up doing a wacky-races style mad dash through the back-lanes of Derbyshire to make it home from work in time to catch the train. I made it with five minutes to spare. And in those five minutes noticed that one of my rucksack straps was attempting to part company from my rucksack. Arse! The train journey was then blighted by the bloke opposite making a series of loud self-important phone calls. And I’d forgotten quite how much ‘fun’ travelling across London in the rush-hour with baggage is.

I eventually checked into the Travelodge in Woolwich and went out to buy Dominos pizza, super-glue and duct tape. All the ingredients for a fun weekend! I successfully restrained myself from eating any of the pizza (it was going to be ~1/4 of my calories for the race). And in another minor triumph I also reattached the strap to my rucksack, without attaching myself to it permanently.


The start
I eventually dragged myself out of bed at 8.30, after an awful night’s sleep. I’ve no idea why (the room felt like it was at a reasonable temperature), but I kept waking up drenched in sweat and shivering. A lot of other runners were getting taxis to the start, but I thought a gentle 1.5 mile walk would be a good warm-up. And also, it transpired, a good opportunity to practice my navigation. My bearings were rotated by 90 degrees, and I started off walking in completely the wrong direction... I got to the start in plenty of time, but was one of the last runners to register. The bloke issuing the timing chips gave me some OTT spiel about how hard what I was about to do was. I muttered the words ‘Spine race’. But, as a non ultra-runner those two magic words didn’t have any effect on him. [Disclaimer: I’m going to keep mentioning the Spine in this blog. Partly because it’s a natural comparison to make. And partly because I’ll take any opportunity to bang on about it. ]

On the race facebook page there’d been a lot of discussion about pack weight, and a lot of people were planning on carrying more than my 8kg. However at the start there were a few very small, light looking packs. Someone fast could plausibly do the 184 miles in a single push, and therefore get away with carrying the minimum kit required by the rules. But would anyone actually manage this?

Stage 1: Thames Barrier to Brentford, 26 miles
The race start was way more restrained than I was expecting. I’m usually right at the back for the first 20+ miles, but here it didn’t feel like that (and in fact, according to the other-half who followed the race trackers online, I was at the front of the middle of the pack from the outset). I settled straight into a 25:5 run:walk-eat routine. Several people asked me if I was OK as they over-took me during my early walk breaks. I said “yes thanks” and suppressed the urge to add “have you not heard of a run-walk strategy?”.

Following the route through London was a bit tricksy. There were lots of small wiggles which were too small to show up on the (enlarged) 1:40 000 maps we’d been given. There were signposts, but some had been messed with, and sometimes we’d follow one, only to discover that it was the end of a wiggle that we’d missed the start of and now we were going in the wrong direction. There was also one wiggle which led to a locked gate... Along the way I had a chat with Kate & Ernie, two TR250 finishers who quizzed me about the Spine. I was planning to quiz them about TR250 later, but in fact this was the last I’d see of them until the finish.

The crowds in central London provided another challenge. Several times I stopped and walked rather than risking a camera wielding tourist stepping backwards and knocking me flying. It didn’t help that I had to keep a careful eye on my feet. I’d done all of my pack training off-road and kept going over on my ankles on uneven paving slabs.

The race rules said we had to leave checkpoints with a minimum of 1.5 litres of water. Due to the limited access to water on the first stage I carried 2 500ml soft flasks in addition to my 2 750ml Camelback bottles. Part way through the stage we passed some public toilets, but I didn’t stop and refill as I had more than half my water left. It was a warm afternoon though and later on I had to make a detour into a park to top my supplies up.

I arrived at checkpoint 1 (in an alley outside a pub) in just under 6 hours. A bit slower than I’d hoped/planned, but not surprising given the fiddly route and crowd dodging. Despite this, I enjoyed the first stage. Seeing major sites, like the Shard, appear in the distance and then disappear behind me, really emphasised how far we were going.

I sat down on the floor briefly and aired my feet and ate some pizza. People seemed amused/surprised by the pizza-most of the other mid-pack runners were sparking up Jetboils and eating Expedition meals.


Stage 2: Brentford to Windsor, 26 miles
I was familiar with most of this section from the 2013 TP100. Fortunately the weather was a lot better and the ground under foot much less muddy. I kept up the 25:5 run-walk strategy until dusk. By then 25 minutes of running were becoming a bit of a struggle (not a surprise given the pack-weight) and I switched down to 10:5. I also stopped in some public toilets to change into night-gear. I’d planned to keep my thin long sleeve top on through the night but I’d drenched it with sweat. I also realised, from the colour of only my 2nd wee of the race, that I was probably dehydrated from rationing my water supplies during the first stage.

Just before Staines it started raining heavily and I stopped again to put on my waterproof jacket. The rain was a bit frustrating. It alternated between fairly heavy (and jacket definitely required) and drizzle, where I’d over-heat.

I normally have no problems running through a single night, and my vague plan was to not stop and sleep until the 2nd night. However already I was feeling tired and sleepy. The wheels fell off just after Staines and I walked the last couple of miles to the checkpoint.

Many of the checkpoints were located at pubs, and I’d formed a mental picture of sitting in a function room, in the dry. So it came as a bit of a shock to be directed to some benches by the riverside (in retrospect this was completely appropriate given the unsupported nature of the event). I was also somewhat taken aback to be told I was 3rd woman. I think my reaction was “whaaaat!”. I sat down on one of the benches and ate some pizza. And to my even greater surprise saw Simone (i.e. the 2nd place woman) just leaving. Even with all my layers on it was too cold and wet to sit for long, so I soon headed out again myself.


Stage 3: Windsor to Henley, 28 miles
I settled back into my 10:5 run:walk routine, and went back and forth with 2 blokes. I got a bit confused in Windsor when the route deviated from the TP100 route. It wasn’t long until I was feeling really sleepy, and when the route doglegged away from the main path, I decided to stop and try and grab a couple of hours sleep. I couldn’t nod off though and after 45 minutes lying in my sleeping bag in my bivy I was shivering, so I gave up and got going again. The break had perked me up and I managed half an hour of solid running, before switching back to the run-walk routine. The one problem with this was temperature control: while running I’d over-heat and then the sweat would chill me during the walk breaks.

Along the way I passed various groups of runners bivvied out, sometimes with running gear and Jetboils strewn around them. At Cookham at dawn I felt really sleepy again and tried, and failed again, to sleep in the porch of the church. Shortly afterwards I passed two blokes who appeared to be attempting to sleep bolt upright on a park bench. The rest of the route was new to me (the 2013 TP100 was rerouted onto an out and back course due to flooding), but at this point the navigation was fairly straightforward.

I went back and forth with another two blokes as the day warmed up and I kept stopping to strip off layers of clothing. I had another bad spot coming into Henley and ended up walking it in. I’d been slowly catching a bloke wearing even more purple than me, but he ran away from me. It was now mid morning, and there were lots of people of all ages and shapes out rowing. I briefly thought that rowing looked like fun, but then came to my senses.

After some brief confusion, when I encountered some supporters looking for the checkpoint at the pub location we’d originally been given, I eventually made it to checkpoint 3. This wasn’t one of the designated sleeping checkpoints, but various runners had slept there. I wished this had occurred to me-I might have done a better job of both sleeping and pushing through the night.

I sat down on the floor, ate some more pizza and inspected my feet. Just one small blister on a toe. The purple bloke had huge blisters on his toes and (I later discovered) stopped here. As I packed up to leave Simone came into the checkpoint. I guess she’d been in one of the groups I’d passed bivvying overnight. Which made me, for now at least, 2nd woman. Gulp.


Stage 4: Henley to Streatley, 20 miles
There were lots of runners at CP3, some of whom had stopped for something approaching a proper nights sleep, so I was expecting loads of people to stream past me. Early on Kevin, who went on to finish 3rd, piled past, moving faster than I can with fresh legs and no load. But otherwise I only saw a couple of other runners on this stage.

Before Reading there was a stretch of single track where I had several close encounters with mountain bikers, who piled around blind bends at high speed. I was unimpressed (and had to restrain myself from shouting ‘that’s quite alright’) at the lack of thanks for stepping off the narrow track to let them by.

I wasn’t looking forward to running through the festival crowds at Reading, but actually they were mostly pretty considerate, if somewhat perplexed about what I was up to. Two girls handing out Ritz crackers tried to give me some and I tried to explain (without stopping) that I love Ritz crackers but couldn’t take them. Later on I encountered a couple of boys who asked me if I could show them where on my map we were and where the shops were:

Me: “Sorry I don’t know where the shops are, I’m not from around here”.
Boys: “So where’re you running?”
Me: “From London, to the end of the Thames.”
Boys: “wtf!?”

I was also joined briefly by a bloke who’d been following the race at home and had come out to meet some of the runners. We chatted for a bit as I kept running. I tried to ignore the fact that he was easily keeping up with me, while walking. Being told that I was in 16th place was a surprise though, and perked me up.

Around Whitchurch-on-Thames the wheels fell off a bit. I went rapidly from ‘run-walking’ to walking to struggling to walk. A quick sit down and a Mars bar got me going again, and I actually enjoyed the one properly hilly section of the route. I caught someone who’d passed me in Reading looking strong only a few miles before. Now he was struggling and would drop at the next checkpoint in Goring. Just before Goring Lee B caught me, powering along with his poles. We chatted for a bit and I discovered that while he hadn’t run a 100+ mile race before he was a much, much faster runner than me (with a 100k PB faster than my 50 mile PB...).

We got to Goring, at about 100 miles, at ~4pm, just under 30 hours after the start. A couple of hours slower than I hoped, but not bad going given the pack weight (and 4 or 5 hours faster than my first two 100s...). I was surprised more people, and in particular women, hadn’t caught me.

The Sun was shining, and a handful of runners were sleeping at the checkpoint. Some right by the checkpoint van and others in the adjacent paddock. Beforehand I’d thought I wouldn’t need to sleep at this point and half-planned to push on to Oxford or even beyond. But I was feeling pretty tired so grabbing a couple of hours sleep before the temperature plummeted overnight seemed like a good idea. First I phoned the OH to tell him of my change of plans, so he wouldn’t worry about my tracker not moving. It was also an excuse to try and get some info about the whereabouts of the other women. In particular I’d been getting conflicting info about the leading woman. She’d been at, or close to, the front of the race, but a lot of the front runners had dropped. The OH was at a wedding, so couldn’t check the tracker then, but promised to do so before he went to bed and text me the positions of the other women.

I
crawled into my bivy bag in the paddock, initially leaving my kit strewn around me. After a while though it started raining, and I frantically stuffed everything into or under the bag. I did manage to sleep, but only in restless 15 minute bursts. Eventually I gave up and got ready to get moving again. I had a decent sized blister on the ball of one foot, which I drained and dressed, before having my ‘dinner’ (more cold pizza and hula hoops). During this process a group of runners, including Simone, arrived. So, to my surprise, I was still hanging on to the 2nd woman position.

I went to the checkpoint van to let them know I was leaving and managed to cause some confusion:

Me: ’Just to let you know, I’m off now’.
Bloke with clipboard: ’Oh. I thought you left several hours ago’.
Me: ‘I’ve been sleeping in the field’
Bwc: (crosses my name off list) ‘You’ll have to give us your tracker then’
Me: ’NOOOOO!!!, I’m not dropping out’

Thankfully, the woman who’d been wielding the clipboard when I arrived then appeared and sorted out the confusion.


Stage 5: Streatley to Oxford, 30 miles
I decided (after my temperature control problems the night before) that my best bet was to walk through the night at a constant (but hopefully not too slow) pace. There were a couple of hours of daylight left, and it was a pleasant evening but already beginning to chill. At one point I was surprised to see runners going in the opposite direction on the other side of the river. Had I gone badly wrong, or had they? Then I remembered that the Ridgeway 85 (one of my two Ultra DNFs back in 2010) was also taking place.

Approaching a small country lane, miles from anywhere, a woman appeared and shouted ‘Is that Anne?’. ‘Umm, yes’. I was a bit confused. It turns out that she had a friend who had started the race and DNFed and, after watching the trackers on line, had come out to meet some of the participants. We chatted for a bit and she told me that the leading woman was in fact in the lead overall. She also took a picture and emailed it to the OH. The Sun was going down so I put my layers on for the night, before heading off.

At Benson the riverside path was closed and it wasn’t obvious where the diversion went. There was an obvious alternative by road, but I didn’t want to go wildly off-route. So uncharacteristically (I don’t like asking for help) I flagged down a passer-by and asked if he knew where the diversion went. It turned out the diversion was the obvious road alternative.

Back on the riverside path, I caught a group of ‘normal’ people. It was pub kicking-out time so I was a bit wary about this encounter. However it turned out they were rowing a section of the Thames and were on the way back to their wild camp for the night.

Seeing their tents made me think how nice it would be to stop and sleep. And shortly afterwards I started hallucinating. Not full blown talking to imaginary friends or worrying about treading on gnomes hallucinations. But ‘oh look there’s a penguin... oh no it’s a rock. And there’s a lop-eared rabbit,... oh no it’s another rock. And there’s a wicker sculpture of an athletic looking woman in that tree. Oh no it’s just some branches’ (A psychologist would have a field day with what I was ‘seeing’).

As the night went on the path got narrower, and as I got more and more sleepy it got harder to stay up-right. The temperature was also varying a lot. It was always cold, but there were some patches where the temperature seemed to plummet. At one of the locks there were a couple of runners bivvied out, so I decided to join them for a 45 minute nap (after activating the lock house security lights while blundering around looking for a toilet).

The nap perked me up, and for a couple of miles I felt good. I then got to Abingdon. First there were sections were the river curved pointlessly (and it would have been far quicker and easier to ‘cut the corner’). Then there was a narrow muddy section through woodlands where the path kept bending back on itself and I got paranoid that I was going in the wrong direction. This was followed by some good, but never-ending, path past Radley and into Oxford. Dawn came and I was expecting to see the ‘dreaming spires’ in the distance at any moment but they never really appeared. I got really sleepy again, and couldn’t resist a 5 minute power-nap propped against a rusty metal fence.

Eventually I got to Oxford, which was a bit surreal. I lived in Oxford for 3 years as a student (a couple of hundred metres from the checkpoint in fact). But I never ventured onto the paths alongside the river back then, so I passed through somewhere that used to be home without really seeing anything familiar.

Given how sleepy I was, I decided another nap would be a good idea. The two blokes manning the checkpoint (one of whom, Chris, had stayed to help out after dropping out due to injury) gave me a choice of two park benches. I chose the marginally more comfy looking one and dozed for another 45 mins. During this time Lee B passed through; he’d stopped to sleep over night and I’d passed him without knowing.

I had a quick breakfast (more cold pizza) and assessed my food supplies. It was becoming clear a 60 hour finish wasn’t happening and I was going to have to ration my calories. I put aside a handful of gels and a Mars bar to see me through a 3rd night. I also inspected my feet. Superficially they looked a bit of a mess (loads of dead skin from trashing them in the Lakes was falling off), but actually they weren’t too bad. My taping had stopped the blister getting worse but had caused another blister further along (when it rucked up under my toes). It also looked like the other foot might be starting to blister. To the bemusement of the checkpoint guys I tried to see if there was any fluid under the skin by hitting it. It seemed like a good idea at the time... I was also unsure of how many layers to remove. The Sun was well and truly up, but the checkpoint was in a sheltered spot. Eventually (and after putting on and fastening my rucksack and front pack) I decided that 2 jackets was over-kill and that I should remove 1 of them.

Just before I waddled out of the checkpoint (‘looking good’, ‘yeah right’) a group of 3, including the two-some whose bivvy spot I’d crashed, arrived.


Stage 6: Oxford to Radcot, 25 miles
The first few miles out of Oxford were quite pleasant. As the Sun got high in the sky it started to get quite hot, and I took off not just my jacket, but also my long-tights and thick base-layer too (replacing them with 3/4 tights and a thin top rather than carrying on in just my underwear...). I had a couple of goes at running, but after walking through the night it felt really slow and cumbersome, and I convinced myself (far too easily) that I’d be better off just walking at a steady pace.

I had a shouted conversation with a friendly couple on a canal boat about what I was doing. And then a couple of less positive encounters with dog-walkers which brought my mood crashing down. Twice pairs of large dogs charged at me and then circled me, while the owners didn’t give a toss and made no attempt to call them back. In one case the dogs even head-butted my bum! Normally I’d have told the owners exactly what I thought of their behaviour, but I didn’t trust myself not to lose it completely (or cry). Then, just to rub things in, one of the dog-walkers had spent a lot of time jamming a gate firmly shut (despite the fact he could see me coming in the opposite direction) and in opening it I removed a slice of flesh from one of my thumbs.

Onwards I plodded. I stopped briefly at a lock for a ‘slice of cold pizza’ lunch, but got bored sitting and decided to walk along eating instead, in the process briefly repassing Lee B who’d stopped to make a proper lunch. He recaught me and we had a brief chat before he power-walked off into the distance at high speed. This sent my mood into a tail-spin. How could he walk so much faster than me? I sat down randomly in the corner of a field and phoned the OH. I thought I was doing this so I could tell him I was moving slowly, but was otherwise OK, and not to worry. However subconsciously I wanted to be cheered up. And he did try, but the conversation in fact just made me even more miserable:

Me: ‘Hello, I’m just phoning to let you know that I’m moving really slowly and it’s going to take a lot longer than I thought.”
Him: ‘I’d spotted. Have you trashed your feet?’ [I’d warned him beforehand that if I trashed my feet I’d slow down.]
Me: ‘No I’m just really slow.’
Him: ‘Well you’ve only got 45 miles to go.’ [He might not have actually used the word ‘only’...]
Me: ‘WHAT? I thought it was 40?’ [My Suunto was reading 5 miles long, I’d misremembered the length of this section and thought it was 20 miles rather than 25, and someone at the last checkpoint had told me there was 50 miles to go from there. All of which had combined to make me think I had 5 less miles left than there actually was. Plus, 40 miles is always a long way. When you’ve already done 140 and are moving at 2.5 miles an hour, it’s an unimaginably long way.]
Me: ‘Where are the other women behind me?’
Him: ‘A long way back. One at 8 miles and one at 16.’
Me (not thinking straight): ’That’s not a long way back. I’d better get moving.’

And I rang off rather abruptly and stomped off. While radiating an aura of pissedoffness at the Universe, I had a couple of strange encounters with passersby. First a couple on mountain bikes appeared perpendicular to the path (through some crops) wanting to know if this was the Thames Path and if so which direction Oxford was. And then I met a middle-aged woman who wanted to know if I’d seen her son who was also doing the race. Umm, you’re going to need to give me more information than that. Apparently his name was James and he was tall. Which didn’t really help. I randomly said there might be someone fitting that description behind me. [I hope she didn’t hang around waiting for him for long, there were two tall (relative to me) Jameses in the race but one was a looong way in front of me, and the other some way behind.]

I tried to walk fast, but this didn’t last long and soon I sat down on a concrete block for a snack. The concrete block was in fact part of a bridge, and I had to get up again to let some people through. I then took a deliberate detour around a crowded pub beer garden as I couldn’t face walking through it. Once no-one was in sight I sat down and had a 5 minute power-nap which perked me up a bit.

Next there was a section where the path kept crossing the river and running between various streams. I kept getting confused. ‘Fuck! I’m on the wrong side of the river.’ ‘Oh no, it’s fine, I’ve just rotated the map in my hand.’ Repeat times three. Then the path meandered around never ending bends surrounded by annoying pink bushes. I don’t like pink flowers at the best of times, and these ones really irritated me. To the extent that I sat down on a stinging nettle cover pillbox and sulked for a couple of minutes. A bit later I passed an old couple who asked if I’d seen a bridge over the river. ‘Yes, a while back, maybe a mile, maybe two, I’m not sure. It was round lots of bends.’ They probably thought the bridge wasn’t the only thing which was round the bend...

Over the last couple of hours the penny had slowly dropped that this stage was a bit longer than I’d originally thought. With 22 miles on the clock since Oxford there was still another 3 or 4 to go. Time for another power nap. The last stretch to the checkpoint at Radcot didn’t drag as much as the preceding sections though. Shooing some large cattle off the path provided a minor diversion. Checkpoint 6 was one of the designated sleeping checkpoints, and I desperately needed another ‘proper’ (i.e. 45 minute, rather than 5) sleep. However as Radcot came into sight the world’s worst pub cover band came into earshot.

Chris came out from the checkpoint to meet me and I moaned about the never ending pink bushes. At the checkpoint I ate my final slice of (now legendary) cold pizza and (at their request...) showed people my blisters, before heading off to find somewhere quieter to sleep.


Stage 7: Radcot to Castle Eaton, 13 miles
A mile or so out from the checkpoint I found a suitable spot under a tree and, after a quick (and slightly more upbeat) call to the OH, settled down for a couple of hours of not too fitful sleep. I was expecting a lot of the people behind to catch and pass me while I was stopped, but knew I was too tired to sensibly keep going through the night. [I later discovered that only one person passed me while I was stopped, and I re-passed him without knowing during the night.] As I was packing up Mark appeared and set up camp. I sheepishly told him about my five minute power-naps, and he admitted he was doing something similar.

The next short section didn’t seem to take too long. There were various things to keep me entertained. Firstly a field full of frisky heifers that charged en masse every time I turned my back on them, and needed very firm shooing. Then a disorientating labyrinthine section around Buscot where the path was fenced tightly into the river and the river meandered lots. And finally a section of the A361 with fast moving traffic (which according to the Thames Path map ‘is best negotiated by taxi or bus’). At least the head-lights gave me plenty of warning to jump onto the sloping verge. In the midst of the fun and games someone came out of a dinner party to ask if I was doing T184 and did I need any water.

The benefits of my sleep wore off after a couple of hours and I reverted to regular power-sit-naps, even when it started raining. A couple of miles out from Castle Eaton I made my first navigation error. After crossing two bridges I needed to turn right, but initially I turned too soon. At the time I thought I’d lost my ability to count to two, but later that night I discovered that not all the small bridges were marked on the map. I quickly became suspicious that reality wasn’t matching the map and my compass confirmed that I was going in the wrong direction. I back-tracked and soon spotted one of the pieces of tape that had been put out to mark the last two stages.

The last stretch into Castle Eaton was on tarmac and easy to follow, and I soon came across Cliff, who’d come out from the checkpoint to meet me. We burbled at each other about various races (Spine, Viking Way,...) while I tried to force feed myself as many of my remaining chopped Hula Hoops as I could. Cliff showed me the where the route continued and I headed off into the rain, while he headed in the opposite direction to meet Lee S and Ernie who were not far behind me.


Stage 8: Castle Eaton to Thames Head, 16 miles
Crossing the first field I headed towards what I thought was a reflective sign on a gatepost. The fluorescent green blob was in fact the eyes of a small creature which proceeded to stalk me. This was a bit unnerving, but whatever it was, it wasn’t very big. The first part of this stage stuck closely to the river as it meandered through fields. The number and direction of the bridges on the ground didn’t match the map and, since the route was quite clear, I gave up on keeping track of my position on the map.

Later on the path crossed the river and climbed above it. The Spine race honed my ‘National Path acorn symbol’ spotting skills, but at one point I moved away from the fence line to avoid a boggy area and missed a turn. The lack of TP signs and tape made me suspicious that I’d gone wrong, but there was still a path on the ground. The battery life on my Ambit had run out a couple of hours before so I couldn’t check my location. In similar situations earlier I had in fact been on course (just moving slowly) so I decided that pressing on was the right decision here too. Eventually I hit a track, which definitely wasn’t on the route. And also realised that I’d moved away from the lights of Cricklade. I briefly considered trying to go ‘cross-country’ to get back on track, but decided to play it safe and back-track. Looking at the map afterwards, going cross-country would have involved several river crossings and would have been disastrous. I eventually found the turn I missed a couple of hundred metres back from where I first got suspicious I’d gone wrong. And mentally kicked myself hard. I’m not sure quite how much time I lost. At least 20 minutes, it could quite possibly have been longer (I’d completely lost track of how fast, or slow, time was passing). On the other-hand repeatedly turning back prematurely, or carrying (and faffing around with) a GPS could have cost me longer.

I eventually arrived in Cricklade around dawn and couldn’t resist a quick nap in the church porch. As usual I set my alarm for 5 minutes, but woke up 10 minutes later, shivering. I plodded on. The rain had stopped, but I was wet and struggling to warm up. I was desperately willing the Sun to break through the clouds. And beginning to wonder whether it was safe for me to continue, given how cold and sleepy I was. In the maze of the lakes of the Cotswold water park I spotted someone ahead moving slowly. I pushed to try and catch them, but soon ran out of steam and sat down for a(nother) rest.

I eventually caught Lee S (who’d passed me when I went off route) as he looked for a turn in Ashton Keynes. After a brief chat, I took the lead and route marched us along a path through another set of lakes. The pace was unsustainable, but it did warm me up enough to take off one of my jackets. We then continued past more lakes and through fields at a more sedate pace. We weren’t a particularly cheery pair. Lee had been carrying an ankle injury for a long way and was pretty miserable and I was miserable for no good reason. I morphed into one of those people who bang on about races they’ve done, but with a spin to match my state of mind (‘’Spine race, bog, blah, ldwa 100s, styles, blah, UTMB, cutoffs too tight, too many people, blah”).

Just before Ewen we nearly went off route. We were contemplating splashing through a small river, until Lee pointed out the lack of footprints meant it probably wasn’t the right way. The actual route contoured around the edge of the fields and through a herd of lazy cows who didn’t want to move. The last few fields were interminable. They weren’t particularly steep or overgrown, but it felt like crawling up a mountain. Someone appeared walking in the opposite direction. I initially thought they were coming out to meet us, but it was just an ordinary walker. The path wasn’t particularly clear and I went ahead to scout out the route, and shouted back to Lee (who was getting increasingly miserable) once I’d found it.

Eventually the finish came into sight: a gazebo, a small crowd of people and the infamous stone. I put on a bit of a finishing jog (the closest to running I’d got in 24 hours) and came to a halt under the gazebo. But no the official finish was the stone, a few, uphill, metres away.

After leaning on the stone, I put my extra layers of clothes back on (for some reason, jumping into my waterproof trousers, a manoeuvre that could have gone very badly wrong) and phoned the OH to let him know I had, finally, finished. Shane, the organiser, plied me with chocolate and I told him it was the 2nd hardest thing I’d ever done. The finish line set up was very efficient. We were walked to the nearby pub, where there was a tent with hot soup and space to change into clean, dry clothes. A bit later I got a lift to the train station, where there were lots of people talking bumpkin (my native language) which made me realise quite how far I’d run-walked.



There were 69 starters. Of the 17 finishers I was 9th in 72h 32 min. However the finishing place is somewhat flattering. 8th place was nearly 8 hours in front of me and the last finishers were only just over 4 hours behind.

On my ‘how hard is it for someone slow like me to finish comfortably within the time-limit’ scale (where Ironman is a 1, a flat 100 a 2, GUCR a 3 and the Spine an 8) the T184 is a 4. But I made it feel like a 5 by starting with over-ambitious goals.

T184: preparation

I’d entered T184 as soon as entries opened a year ago. 184 unsupported miles sounded right up my street and would give me something to look forward to post-Spine. After my aborted 24 hour track race in mid-June, I started my T184 training. By taking four weeks off running. (I did do some hard sessions on the turbo.) I’d hoped that this would let my achilles injury heal, but in fact it got no better. So I decided to start doing long-runs with my pack and hope for the best.

I built up the length of runs and also the pack weight, to the full 8kg I’d be starting with. I peaked three weeks out with back to back 15 and 25 milers at 5 mph. Which I was pretty happy with; I’ve only just managed to increase my long pack-less training run pace from 5mph to 5.5mph this year. I also threw in a long weekend on (most of the) L100 route. This was mainly for fun, but plodding around with a heavy pack was probably good training, even if it did trash my feet. Somewhere along the line (possibly thanks to sleeping in a Strassbourg sock) my achilles stopped niggling.

Two weeks out I had my worst training run. 12 miles without the pack in a heavy storm where I struggled to average 5 mph. The sluggish-ness carried on through the next week, but I guess it was just taper-itis as the next weekend I was on fire (by my very ploddy standards). I did my fastest time ever on my regular 3 mile training loop, and then took 10 minutes off my best time for my favourite undulating off-road 10 mile Peak District route. So it was then a case of keeping the powder dry until race day. And rueing the fact that my new found ‘speed’ was pretty superfluous for a 184 mile unsupported event.

Since this was the first running of the race it was difficult to guess how long it was going to take. The time limit was 80 hours, and I hoped/thought I could finish significantly faster than that. After the Spine just aiming to finish other races seems a bit feeble. I finished GUCR last year in 37 and a bit hours, and even when the wheels fell off towards the end I was moving at 3 mph. So my calculation went: take my GUCR time, add 13 hours to it for the extra ~40miles and then add another 10 hours for the rucksack, giving 60 hours. Initially I then added another 10 hours of wiggle room, but somewhere along the line I ditched the wiggle room and went for 60 hours as my goal.

I also, misguidedly, decided to aim for a placing in the women’s field. The tracking software included runner profiles, so I didn’t need to google stalk people. Karen Hathaway (a GB 24 hour international and winner of the gnarly Ceasar’s camp 100) was the clear favourite. Of the other 14 women there were 4 or 5 who had similar long ultra and multi-day backgrounds to me (e.g. Thames Ring 250, double Ironman, Rovaniemi 150). So I guessed top 5, or even top 3, was a plausible goal.

A weekend in the Lakes

A free weekend in July seemed like a good excuse for a running trip to the Lakes. My solo lap of the UTMB route 2 years ago was my running highlight of that Summer. So I wanted to try and recreate that experience, but closer to home, on the Lakeland 100 (L100) route.

I’ve never actually run the L100. People often assume that I have. But I’ve never quite got around to it. I did the inaugural L50 back in 2008 as my first 50, not quite realising what I’d got my self into. My natural sense of direction is quite good so I’d never had to learn to map read. But, I discovered, a ‘quite good sense of direction’ was not sufficient to get me around the L50 route... At least not back then, when there were only 40 entrants, the road book wasn’t so polished and the route wasn’t so obvious on the ground. Thankfully I teamed up with someone who’d recced the route and, after some heavy storms through the night, we hobbled into Coniston in just under 18 hours. These days that time would see you at the back of the field, but in 2008 it put us in the top of half and, to my amazement, as 2nd woman (out of 3...) I won some Petzl goodies. The first time I’d ever won stuff for doing something sporty.

When I entered the 50 I’d naively thought I might do the 100 the year after. But the 50 made me realise it was way beyond me. Quite how far beyond I didn’t appreciate for another couple of years, until I’d ‘crawled’ the last 30 miles of my first 100. Which left me scared of the L100. To be honest, up until a couple of years ago my climbing skills were so pants I probably couldn’t have got around in the 40 hour time limit. With the right preparation I’m fairly sure I could now, but the proof is in the finishing and it’s never quite made it to the top of my priority list. I’m pondering the Tor des Geants in 2016 (my main focus for 2015 is probably going to be the Thames Ring 250) and the L100 might be good preparation. Writing that down makes me realise quite how far my boundaries have shifted in the past couple of years...

So, back to the here and now. I cooked up a plan to get the train up to Penrith on Friday evening, walk to Dalemain and then run/walk the L100 route Spine style (i.e. with a big rucksack and not much sleep) over the weekend, catching the last train home on Sunday evening. Some basic maths revealed that this was a tad overambitious. There are 48 hours in a weekend. The L100 cut-off is 40 hours. And I would be carrying a rucksack full of supplies and stopping to sleep. So I revised my plans to arrive in Penrith early afternoon, giving myself a whole half a dozen extra hours...

After a couple of busy road-crossings and frequently jumps onto the verge on some narrow country roads, I was relieved to make it onto the route at Dalemain. The first few fields contained some of the skankiest sheep I’ve ever seen. I was tempted to say something (in my best bumpkin accent) to the farmer silaging in the neighbouring field, but thought better of it. I managed a bit of jogging along the river into Pooley Bridge, where I paid 20p to use the loo, hoping to top up my water supplies. Unfortunately they had one of the fancy ‘all in one’ hot water and soap machines so I bought an over-priced bottle from the village shop. I then made decent progress up to the cockpit and down to Howtown, passing lots of mountain bikers in a race struggling up in the heat.

The climb up to Fusedale was fine. I don’t really get the fuss about it. Sure in the L100 it’d be hard work, but after 70 miles any climb is tough. And this one, while long, is easy underfoot and not too steep. The route over High Kop and down to Haweswater was far easier to follow than it was six years ago. Back then I’d had a mental picture of a nice smooth track to jog around the lake, and the rocky narrow track came as a nasty surprise and I think I walked the whole way. Now, with a few more off-road miles in my legs, I jogged the whole way, despite the heavy rucksack, with one stop to collect and filter some water. At the top of the lake several people were wild-camping and relaxing outside their tents. I felt a slight pang of jealousy. It was only ~8pm and I was planning on pressing on for another three or four hours. I did treat myself to a quick stop at Mardale Head for an expedition meal. While the water was boiling I took my boots off and was somewhat alarmed by what I saw. Since I was carrying a heavy pack I’d decided to wear my Roclite boots, for extra ankle support. However, inside the water-proof lining, my feet were broiling, and I already had the start of a blister. I should have dressed it there and then but I was getting ambushed by midges. So I stuffed my feet back into my boots and headed up Gatescarth pass, expedition meal in hand. I stopped half way up to eat it but got ambushed again, and ended up trying to eat while climbing.

The descent to Sadgill was every bit as rocky and painful as I remembered. I’d initially planned to stop somewhere on Garburn pass, but the small climb out of Sadgill over to Kentmere took the wind out of my sails and I stopped at the top and bivvied. It was a warm night and I ended up sleeping with my head out of my bivy bag. This was fine until dawn when the midges struck again (despite there being no water anywhere nearby). Instead of having breakfast and dressing my feet I got straight back on the ‘road’. It wasn’t the smoothest start to a day. First, on a short road section, I met an over-protective cow who wouldn’t let me between her and her calves, but didn’t want to join them on the other side of the road. Then I screwed up my navigation and headed out of Kentmere in completely the wrong direction. I was short of water and, due to the heat-wave, I got a long way up Garburn pass before I found a decent stream. Jogging down the other side I passed a couple of proper fell-runners, heading up faster than I was going down.

I stopped in Troutbeck for a late breakfast (of 2 day old sandwiches and Hula hoops) and sorted my feet out. By now I had a blister right across the ball of my left foot. Looking on the bright side this was a great opportunity to test the Spine race medical team’s recommended blister care technique: drain it, cushion it with moleskin and secure with kinesiology tape. The footpaths got steadily busier, and (after 18 hours on my own in the hills) Ambleside felt like hell on Earth-dozens of tourists milling around in high end outdoor gear. I stopped at the supermarket to buy water and a couple of kingsized Mars bar. And wondered if I was invisible as several of the ‘high end walking gear’ types jumped the queue for the self checkout in front of me. I then had to do several laps of the town centre before I found the route through Rounday park.

Just before Skelwith Bridge I stopped to look at the map and was caught by a bloke in a 2012 UTMB t-shirt with a big rucksack. He was doing this year’s race and recce-ing the route from Ambleside to Keswick. We had a brief chat (in which I put my foot in it by saying ‘2012-that was one of the shortened years’) before he powered away from me on the flat path to Elterwater. My feet were pretty sore by now and I was (slowly...) walking anything that wasn’t a gentle downhill. After a brief stop for more sandwiches and Hula hoops I slowly plodded my way through Chapel Stile, past Blea tarn and over the pass to Tilberthwaite. I was barely moving faster than people who were out for a walk, but the climb out of Tilberthwaite did at least feel easier than it did at the end of the 50.

By now it was late afternoon and I’d have loved to stop in Coniston for an ice-cream, but if I was to have any chance of completing the loop I needed to press on for another 15-20 miles. At the base of Walna Scar Road it started raining and I stopped and put on my waterproof jacket and trousers. And felt like a complete wuss when a fell runner steamed past in vest and shorts... In fact there were walkers descending wearing less clothes than me. After Seathwaite the rain got heavier and I was tempted to stop in the woods and camp, but it was a bit too early to stop. Thanks to the dry weather the plantation wasn’t too boggy and (unlike my last rece) I even managed the descent down into the valley without landing on my bum once.

I eventually decided to call it a day just after Boot. Where I had the worst night’s sleep ever. It was raining heavily but humid. With the zip on my bivy bag nearly closed the condensation from my breath was soaking my down sleeping-bag. With the zip even slightly open the rain poured in and I ended up lying awake in my foil survival bag in a puddle, shivering for several hours. When dawn came I put on all my layers and marched off, hoping to warm up and dry off. In fact it didn’t take too long. By the time I passed the Bob Graham support crews waiting at the campsite in Wasdale I was stripped back down to tights and a long-sleeve top. The climb up Black Sail pass was fine. However the descent down the other side was a bit tricksy. In the dark in the race it would be ‘fun’ to say the least. Passing the Youth Hostel it started raining again.

I plodded over to Buttermere on increasingly sore feet, modifying my plans for the weekend. There was no way I could get back to Penrith by that evening. I could have extended my trip by a half day but my gear was soaking wet, and I didn’t fancy another night shivering in a puddle. Finding a B&B was another option, but Keswick was the last decent size place I’d pass and an evening stuck in a B&B in dirty, wet clothes wasn’t particularly appealing either. So the sensible option was to cut the loop short and head back that afternoon/evening. There was a bus stop with a route map in Buttermere, and I must admit that if there’d been buses running from there I’d have got one. But there wasn’t. So the decision then was whether to get the bus from Braithwaite or Keswick. The route between Braithwaite-Keswick runs alongside a main road, so it didn’t take much to convince myself that stopping at Braithwaite and getting home earlier was the better option.

As I struggled to find the route out of Buttermere, the bloke I’d met the previous day reappeared. (He must have thought I was the world’s bigger navigationally numpty.) He’d stopped at Boot, but had got there several hours before me (and left several hours after...). After another brief chat he pulled away, even more rapidly this time. With my head no longer really in it, I made several minor navigation errors and was taken aback by quite how steep the climb up Sail pass was. After overshooting the turn up to Barrow Door (this section definitely warrants another recce) I finally jogged down into Braithwaite, just in time for the hourly bus. The bus filled up in Keswick, but the seat next to me remained empty. I guess I might have been a little bit smelly...

Written down, it doesn’t sound like it was much fun. But it, mostly, was. And while my feet were very sore in the end (lesson learnt: never wear waterproof boots in hot weather), the Spine race blister care let me plod out another 60 plus miles without too much pain. It’s a bit depressing quite how slowly I was moving at the end. I deliberately haven’t checked, but I suspect the section from Coniston to Buttermere took me several hours longer than the L100 cut-off. On the day I wouldn’t have 50 miles in my legs and a 7kg rucksack on my back. But I definitely shouldn’t under-estimate it.

Gloucester 24 hour track race

When I entered this I was aiming at a PB (>103.3 miles) and an ambitious goal of 110 miles. The ‘suitcase on wheels incident’ put paid to that. It was possible that my legs would be up for 20+ hours of running, but it didn’t look likely; even 25 mile training runs were leaving me with sore legs. Plus after a couple of stressful weeks at work (exam season) and at home (house buying and selling) I didn’t have much in the way of mental reserves. My plan was to set off at 5.5 mph (with half a lap walking every 10 laps) and see how long I could hold if for, with the vague goal of breaking my 9.59 50 mile PB.

A couple of days beforehand I went for a short run in an old, clunky pair of shoes and discovered my achilles tendon grumbled far less than in my usual shoes. So I started the race in the old shoes. I also decided to wear a 5 litre rucksack to carry food and water. Without a support crew repeatedly going to the side of the track to pick up snacks can waste a surprising amount of time. And at the track race last Summer I’d had to lengthen my walk breaks to pass the water table twice, in order to get in enough water.

The first ~20 miles went OK. My legs didn’t feel great, but the achilles itself wasn’t hurting at least. I soon remembered why I didn’t usually wear the clunky old shoes: they were causing hot spots on my insteps. I switched to my usual shoes, and realised that their cushioning was completely shot. I hadn’t noticed when wearing them on a daily basis. I didn’t have any other running shoes with me, so had no choice but to wear them.

The other thing which was causing issues was my timing chip. I’d noticed several other runner’s support crews querying their lap counts and was concerned that my chip didn’t always seem to be beeping when I crossed the line. I stopped to query my laps with the timing people. I’d set my Garmin to auto-lap every 1/4 mile. This was slightly less than a full lap (in particular since I was running on the line between lanes 1 and 2 to let faster runners past). But the difference was small enough (about 1 lap in 50) that I could easily keep track of the difference. The checked their data while I ran another lap. It turned out a lap had been missed earlier, and they corrected this. However the time I spent stopped sorting this out was longer than it would have taken to run another lap... If I’d been going for a 24 hour PB this would have been a problem. But as it was I decided just to count my own laps.

After ~30 miles sticking to my planned pace was becoming more of an effort. However after a quick toilet stop something strange happened. I suddenly starting knocking out 10 minute miles, and it took a concerted effort to even slow down to 10:20mm. I perhaps should have tried harder though. A few laps later, everything was hurting and 11 minute miles was a struggle. At this point John, the sports massage bloke’s words echoed in my head: ‘don’t do anything which stops you doing the things you enjoy doing’ (i.e. don’t bugger your legs up so you can’t run in the hills). However if I could just hold on for a couple more hours I could grind out a 50 mile PB.

It wasn’t much fun. My pace slipped to 12 minute milling, and I was taking walk breaks every 5 laps. But I did it. My Garmin clocked 50 in 9.14 but at this point I’d ‘only’ done 196 laps. I continued for another 5 to make, by my reckoning, 201 laps in 9.29 and stopped. The official results have me down as only having done 196 laps or 48.7 miles, but I’m 99% confident my count is correct, and I’m taking this as a 30 minute 50 mile PB. I checked the leader board (a chalk board with splits every 10 miles). The first two women were way in front, but I was narrowly in 3rd place. This wasn’t enough to make me keep going though. Maybe I could have ground out a 24 hour PB, but my legs were already pretty sore and there was a more interesting race (T184) a couple of months away. And, to be honest, the last couple of hours had already exhausted my paltry mental reserves.

Afterwards I was a bit morose. It had been a struggle and it felt like all the long back-to-back runs and speed work had been for nothing. After a restless night sleeping in the passenger seat of the car I phoned the other-half and whinged about how hard it’d had been. He tried to be sympathetic, but accidentally stuck his foot in it. ‘Maybe it would have been easier if you’d had a goal’ he helpfully suggested. Umm. I did have a goal, which went up in flames when you crashed your suitcase into my achilles tendon.

Looking on the bright-side, I now have a 50 mile PB which is one minute inside the Spartathlon 50 mile cut-off. Doing that in hot weather and then keeping going for another 100 miles including a mountain, is still way out of my league at the moment. But it’s a start.

****ing suitcases on wheels

I’ve never been a fan of suitcases on wheels. Partly on the (slightly fascist I’ll admit) grounds that unless you’re ill or infirm you should carry your luggage. (I’ve recently made a slight concession to middle age and upgraded my scruffy old rucksack to a large, purple, North face holdall). But mainly because a lot of people aren’t very good at driving them, swinging them around wildly behind them or stopping dead at the top/bottom of stairs to raise/lower the handle.

My loathing of them has recently reached new heights. On the way back from (my 40th birthday) holiday in
Bhutan/Katmandu we were rushing to get out of Heathrow and into London in time to catch the last train home. Time was particularly tight as we’d watched the OH’s (purple...) suitcase going around the conveyor belt for 15 minutes, convinced that it wasn’t his. And then there were hordes of people slowly shuffling their way through customs. I led the way and the OH followed, for some unknown reason, pushing his suitcase in front of him. The people in front suddenly stopped and so did I, but the suitcase kept going, bang into my achiles tendon. Not hard enough to do significant damage, but enough to put a massive spanner in my running works.

Pre-holiday the speed work had been working. I was still running intervals pretty slowly (7.30-7.45 minute miling for 400m). But I’d consistently chipped time off my hill-repeats, getting down from my usual 10.30 mm to nearly 9mm, and I was comfortably running back to back long runs at my goal speed of 5.5 mph. So I’d been looking forward to getting back and ramping up the training some more. Instead, with a niggling achiles, running was slow and uncomfortable. I was back to worse than square one. Ten minute milling was an effort, and anything longer than 10 miles produced a never ending list of knock-on niggles.

Maybe taking some time off running to let it heal would have been a good idea. But I wouldn’t then have had time to get my fitness back for the track race (having already had a fortnight off on holiday). Plus the last time I had an achiles problem, six weeks off didn’t make it any better, and in fact it was a three week trekking holiday that cured it. So I slowly ramped the training back up. Speed-wise I’ve got more or less back to where I was pre holiday, and I’ve managed more or less what I planned for long runs (one 30 miler, plus several 20-20 or 15-25 back to backs). But my legs aren’t happy. The achiles is temperamental, sometimes OK, sometimes sore. But the main problem is that the miscellaneous aches that usually start after 50 miles are coming on much, much sooner. If I hadn’t already paid the entry fee and booked a hotel for pre- and post-race I’d probably pull the plug on the track race. My original 110 mile goal looks unlikely and, unlike a trail race, a 24 hour track race isn’t something you jog around for fun. But since I’ve already paid the entry fee and booked a hotel for pre- and post-race I might as well give it a shot.

Speed: the final frontier

After the Spine the obvious question was: What next? In the few days immediately after the race I was seriously considering trying to get a Tor de Geants entry. But as the week went on and it became clear quite how badly I’d broken my head, I binned that idea. I definitely want to do it at some point, but two week long single stage races (and the resulting lack of sleep) in a year is too much for me.

Some of the people who were asking the question, were suggesting a seemingly obvious answer:
the Dragon’s Back. However, having seen the quality of runners who got timed out on day one last year, that’s way out of my league. And even if it wasn’t, stage races don’t really appeal; I’d much rather just keep going. In terms of pushing my limits distance/duration wise, one of the long Arctic races (the Iditarod Trail Invitation, the 6633 or the Yukon Arctic Ultra) really appeals. But that’s going to take some time to prepare for, and I’m not sure how/if/when I’m going to be able to take time off work during term-time. For now I’ve got one eye on the Rovaniemi 150 in 2015 or 2016 and have started slowly accumulating cold winter kit when it’s on special offer.

That still leaves the what next question. Over the last couple of years I’ve chopped a significant amount of time off my 100 mile PB. Going from
so embarrassingly slow that I got overtaken by elderly long-distance walkers to almost respectable. So an obvious question is ‘how low can I go?’ Could I even go sub 20 hours? At the moment, given my 4.18 marathon PB, that seems unlikely. But then even two years ago sub 23 seemed a million miles (or more accurately, 10 hours) away. Maybe it’s time to drop the ‘I’ve only got one speed, slow’ schtick and apply the same focus I put into preparing for the Spine into trying to get less slow.

And I’ve got another half-goal, which is so far beyond where I currently am that I’m almost embarrassed to write it down. I’ve told the OH, but as a non-runner he doesn’t realise it’s not too dissimilar to me expressing a desire to walk on the moon.
Spartathlon. 152 miles from Athens to Sparta including a mountain, and sweltering weather and a 36 hour cut-off. To qualify you have to have run 112 miles in 24 hours or completed a race of 125 or more miles within 37 hours. I’m tantalising close to the later having finished GUCR in 37:17 last year (and if I’d realised that’s what the new rules were going to be I might have tried to move a bit faster towards the end). But the qualifiers are a bit like needing a C at GCSE to do A-level Maths. You can start, but you won’t finish, not unless you seriously up your game. For one-speeded me the main issue is the tight early cut-offs. The cut-off at ~50 miles is 9:30. My 50 mile PB is currently 9:59...

So the plan is weekly speed work and hill repeats sessions, and, as a first step, trying to up my ‘run all day’ pace from 5 to 5.5 miles per hour (which would get me to 50 miles in ~9 hours). I’ve entered the
Gloucester 24 hour track race in June. Last year at the British Ultra Fest, despite a day which included a dodgy knee, blisters, puking and a lot of walking, I managed 103.3 miles. So 110 miles seems like an ambitious, but not insane, goal for this year.

My main motivation for writing about my Spine race in excruciating detail was to process the experience, and get it out of my head. There’s way too much information here (in particular about the inner workings of my head) and it’s not an interesting/entertaining read. In fact it would probably be best left hidden away on my hard drive. But for me finishing the race was definitely a case of ‘standing on the shoulders of giants’. Not only did the 2012 and 2013 finishers demonstrate that it was possible, they shared a lot of information about what it took. So here, in case they’re useful for future entrants, are my Spine ramblings.

The other disclaimer is that this is my version of events. I’ve tried not to tell other people’s stories, in particular since my perception of things which happened might be very different from other people’s (and reality was probably something else again...). However, even for someone as independent/antisocial as me, it’s impossible to write about the race without mentioning other people. If I have got something wrong and/or offended someone, please let me know (ppzamg AT gmail.com) and I’ll try and do something about it.

Spine: random musings

What does it take to finish the Spine race? (n.b. I’m talking here about finishing it, not racing it. The only thing I’ve ever raced was the three-legged race at primary school).

Well you definitely don’t need to be fast. My marathon PB is 4.18, fastest Fellsman time 21.47, and I’ve finished last at the Long Tour of Bradwell. Twice. In fact (having see the way they marched past me towards the end of my first two 100s) I’m guessing some of the speedier LDWA members could do it, without running a single step.

IMHO what it takes is some combination of preparation, (mental & physical) strength and pain. If you’re sufficiently strong and/or willing to suffer you can wing it on the preparation front. But for me spending several months focussing on the race, and spending time in the hills on similar terrain was essential.

Physically there’s definitely a bit of a luck-factor in how well your body holds up. However there are things you can do to minimise the likelihood of problems, in particular working out how to stop your feet blistering. And if your main goal is to finish, I’d definitely suggest thinking about whether it’s worth running (and risking a fall) on the slippery wet/icy flagstones.

What I struggled with most was the sleep deprivation. I don’t have problems running through a single night, but keeping going for a week on a handful of hours a night was another story. The problem is, this is something that’s hard to prepare for. Before doing another race like this I’d definitely look into techniques/strategies for sleeping more efficiently.

I’ve been asked lots of times how the Spine compares with other things I’ve done. The answer is nothing else comes close. It was far, far harder than any other race I’ve done. It’s hard to quantify, but (for someone slow like me whose goal is to finish comfortably within the time-limit) if the Spine is a 8 then Ironman (the most over-hyped thing in the Universe) is at most a 1, a flat 100 a 2 and a hilly 100 or GUCR a 3.

Spine: the aftermath

Or how the Spine broke my head.

Having experienced post race mood swings before, I was expecting the week after the race to be tough. But I had no idea quite how tough. In some ways it was harder than the race itself.

On Saturday I was high as a kite. I spent the train journey home answering e-mails & tweets and posting on various forums I usually just lurk on. The OH picked me up from the station, before heading off to a goth metal gig, leaving me to hog the sofa and bask in a ‘I finished the Spine race’ glow.

The fun and games started when I tried to sleep. I was too high to even try sleeping until the early hours of the morning. My usual post-100 ‘feet being hit with hammers’ pains had started a few days before the end of the race, so I had to take some hefty painkillers to damp that down. Eventually I got to sleep. And a couple of hours later woke up soaking wet and shivering, convinced I’d fallen asleep in a frozen bog and was about to die. I thought the bedroom furniture was dry stone walls and only realised I was in bed at home once I spotted the glowing lights of the alarm clock (you don’t get those in a bog).

On Sunday I was a bit more melancholy. I spent a lot of the day answering work e-mails and watching 80s brat pack films. And wondering if I could find a branch of physics which would allow me to go off on epic expeditions on my own as well as playing with equations. (A couple of years ago I met some geologists whose research involved extended trips to isolated bits of Mongolia to collect rocks). That night I slept in the spare room to avoid disturbing the OH’s sleep. And again woke up, drenched in sweat convinced I’d fallen asleep in a bog. This time I ended up kneeling on the bed, looking out the window trying to work out where I was “there’s some fences, and a river, and some street lights... I’m in the spare bedroom”.

By Monday morning superficially I was recovering well. My toes were healing, my knee/ITB was no worse than it’d been pre-race and I was walking normally. Feeling smug I headed  into the office. And about an hour into the day realised I was in fact completely broken. A constant stream of people dropped by to ask about the race or to update me on things I’d missed in the week I was away. And I struggled to say anything which made any sense (“Germans!”, “toilet floors!”). It felt like trying to pretend to be sober after drinking 10 pints. My body temperature was also all over the place. I had to constantly add and remove items of clothing mid-conversation. At one point I was wearing a down-jacket but no socks or shoes...

Things didn’t get much better as the week went on. The nightmares continued and I was adding to, rather than reducing, my sleep deficit. One night I woke up convinced I had frostbite as I’d lost all sensation in one of my arms. I got up and halfway across the room before I realised it’d just ‘gone to sleep’ as I’d been laid on it. Another night I dreamt that I’d taken the OH on an expedition and his feet had got frozen and he’d had to have them amputated and it was all my fault. And then there was a repeating dream where I was on a very specific descent (I’ve haven’t worked out where on the route) and still to finish.

I’m wondering if my slightly obsessive focus on the route is the underlying cause of the dreams. Or maybe it’s just my head being my head? I’m prone to vivid dreams in times of stress. Or maybe it’s a normal way of processing the experience? Some of the discussion on the Spine facebook page suggests that this might be the case.

On the weight front, the scales said I’d only lost 2kg, but the mirror told a different story. Bones I hadn’t seen for 20 years were visible. I spent the week post race eating constantly. On top of huge meals I got through a tub of Pringles and a packet of doughnuts most days, and only regained a single kg in the process.
 
 
 

Spine: stage 6, the race for last orders

The night before there’d been discussion of leaving the final checkpoint as a group at 2 am. But I didn’t want to commit as I didn’t want to end up in a situation where I was struggling to keep up with the group and slowing them down.  Like the previous nights I slept restlessly, even having taken painkillers to dull the hammering in my feet. At 1 am I got up and went and told Steve, who was up and sat on the sofa, that I wouldn’t be ready to leave at 2. But by 1.30 I was raring to go, so I got up, forced down some breakfast (for the first time) and taped my blister & smeared my feet in sudocream (for the last time...).

In the end only Steve and I were ready to go at 2, so we left and the vague plan was the others would catch us. I got half way across the car park before noticing my pole had got longer, and grown a wrist strap. I’d stolen someone else’s pole. So back I had to go to swap it for my own. Steve’s badly battered feet were causing him pain, whereas the painkillers I’d taken to dull the hammering sensation in mine had done the job. And without even noticing I pulled away.

On my own I happily negotiated my way through Bellingham and across the following moors. I only lost the path briefly, just before Whitley Pike and had to do a bit of heather bashing. I was a bit taken aback to find someone in a car monitoring runners at the next isolated road-crossing. I’d been planning to stop and have a wee there!

I’d been feeling a bit sleepy on the descent to the road, and this got worse. It took all my concentration to stay upright on the slightly uneven climb and descent past Padon Hill. The steep climb along the edge of the forest woke me up a bit, but the subsequent bog was a struggle. At one point I sat down in the bog and closed my eyes for 30 seconds. But common sense prevailed, this was a bad place for a snooze. I knew from my recce that there were some public toilets a few miles away at the end of the forestry section. So I focussed on getting there. I was still very sleepy, but my legs and feet felt fine and this section flew by. Rounding a corner I thought, in the dawn light, I saw a gritstone ridge ahead, but quickly realised that in fact it was the forestry track. I’m not sure whether this counts as an hallucination, but it’s definitely the closest I’ve ever got.

When I got to the toilets my heart sank when I read the sign on the door ‘closed until April 2014’. But I desperately needed to sleep. I couldn’t head onto the Cheviots in this state (and didn’t want to show up at the monitoring point just down the road like this). So I put on my primaloft hat and top and sat down in the doorway. I’m not sure why I thought this was better than lying down-less contact with the cold concrete perhaps?

I dozed for about 30 minutes, waking up as various forestry vehicles went by and finally waking up for good when Gary and Rob appeared. This seemed to be a good time to get moving again, so I took the extra top off and headed off with them. The power-nap had done me the world of good. I was initially slightly chilly and incoherent, but perked up rapidly as we headed into Byrness.

At this point Flip was manning the final roadside monitoring point and enthusiastically plied us with food and drink and explained the diversion around the ‘super bog’. The ever-smiley Ruggiero arrived, and once it started raining heavily he and I headed off along the well-signposted diversion. He was far faster than me though and pulled away on the never ending climbing forestry track.

As the painkillers wore off my right leg became very uncomfortable. Everything hurt, from the hip down through the knee to my ankle. Trying to look on the bright-side, I told myself the pain would help me stay awake (and I’d been very lucky to get this far before the ITB became a problem). I drip-fed myself painkillers through the day to keep the pain manageable though.

Like on my recce the first part of the Cheviots dragged, and I kept myself going with the promise of a stop for an expedition meal at the first refuge hut. Just before I got there Rob and Gary caught me (moving at speed) and we stopped together and ate. Being extremely nosey I got out the visitor book to see if any other Spiners had signed it. None had so far but  Rob and I did adding to the entries we’d both made, a few days apart, back in December.  After eating I shoved my flameless cooking system back into my rucksack, before realising it was still generating heat (and I was potentially at risk of setting my rucksack on fire).

When we left the refuge hut the guys were clearly moving faster than me, and asked if I wanted them to slow down for me. I said no and I’d see them at the finish. However I finally cracked out my iPod and this gave me a much needed boost (why didn’t I do this when I was struggling on the previous two afternoons?). I hadn’t put too much attention into what was on it. I just dumped all my playlists on and (since I usually use it to listen to podcasts) it was set to play them sequentially rather than shuffle. First up was ‘classic metal’. Starting with all of ‘Appetite for Destruction’, including (for some unknown reason) ‘Rocket Queen’ twice.  To my sleep-deprived brain the lyrics seemed remarkably apt. 10 days later I’ve still got

going around in my brain. Next up was Iron Maiden (I’ve got the music tastes of a teenage boy...), including ‘Run to the hills’ and then the Hellacopters (which reminded me of the very happy 2 years I spent living in Stockholm). And plodding along in my music bubble the Cheviots flew by and I kept pace with Gary and Rob’s headtorches a couple of hundred metres in front.

We joined up again for the steep, and painful, descent from Auchope cairn. I grunted lots in the style of a female tennis player. Four of the mountain and medic support crew were stationed in the 2nd refuge hut, and 2 of them came out to meet us. We stopped briefly for a quick hot drink. I slammed down one final Mars bar and we revealed our plotting to arrive in Kirk Yetholm in time for last orders. At this point I was high as a kite and didn’t even sit down. I merrily told Matt(?) the medic that my feet were in a better state than when he’d treated them at Hawes. There were still several hours, several lows and a lot of grunting, to go however.

At the refuge hut a facebook thread on ‘what music would you like to finish the Spine race to?’ had been mentioned. And thinking about this kept my head occupied for a while. I briefly considered ‘Weak’ by Skunk Anansie and ‘Pretend that we’re dead’ by L7 (2 of my favourite tracks ever) before settling for the Sex Pistols cover of ‘My way’.

Just before the start of the long descent into Kirk Yetholm I made one final toilet stop, and it took a concerted effort to catch the guys up again. I then started worrying about whether I’d be able to finish my pint without getting wobbly, so I ate my final packet of Hula Hoops.

On the final road section we discussed, and binned, our earlier plans to jog in to the finish. I said my goal had been to finish in the style of Mick Cooper in the early hours of Saturday morning. However not only was I not going to finish in the style of Mick Cooper, I wasn’t going to finish in the early hours of Saturday morning, it was Friday night! It was suggested I could have a snooze on the bench on the final hill to kill time until Saturday morning, but not to expect them to come back and wake me up.

At the top of the final small hill Rob’s wife and some of the support crew were waiting for us. We power-walked in a line, grunting, towards the finish while they followed us giggling. It was a bit surreal. The village green came into view and there were loads of people standing on it. What were they doing? In fact it was a lot of the race support crew and various runner’s supporters who’d come out of the pub to see us finish. I’ll never forget the reception we got. I didn’t even mind lots of people hugging me (much...)! And, as the finish photos demonstrate, I had the world’s biggest grin on my face.

We went into the pub. I phoned home to tell the OH I’d finished and then had a celebratory pint. I’d liked to say it tasted great, but actually I can’t remember what it tasted like. Ian was in the pub, having had a storming finish. And (with his competitive head on) was enthusiastically telling me what I could do to reduce my finish time in future. I was just ecstatic to have finished well within the 7 day time limit.

Then it was into a mini-bus and a trip to the village centre for food and sleep. There were no showers there. It was possible to get taken somewhere else to have one, but at this point I just couldn’t be bothered. Another fitful night’s sleep followed. I kept falling off my thermarest.  After dreaming I was falling down a river I eventually ditched it and slept on the floor. Reunited with my iPhone, in between bouts of sleep I skim read my e-mail and surfed the web. And discovered quite how much attention the race and the trackers had attracted (including some, umm, rather imaginative discussion on the ARmy Rumour Service).

Overnight the hall filled up as more people arrived, in some cases with some epic stories to tell. After my first wash in a week (in a sink) I put together a very stylish outfit from my remaining items of clean clothing: crocs, primaloft trousers and a purple fleece and down jacket before heading to the station to get the train home.

Spine: stage 5, the 1100 calorie brunch

I had the luxury of a room to myself at CP4, and I got my best night’s sleep of the race. However it still wasn’t a good night’s sleep by any means. It was too warm (and it didn’t occur to my addled brain to turn the heating off) and I got the ‘feet being hit with hammers’ pain that I usually get after a 100 miler.

To get out of the CP I had to climb over Charlie and Alan who were both having their extremely battered feet dressed. Rob was ready to leave at the same time, so we set off together at about midnight. Shortly afterwards we came across a group heading back up the hill having over-shot the Pennine way. My recce memory helped out here, as I twigged where we were and we set off on the fiddly field crossings to and through Alston. Like the previous day I felt great, full of energy (and premature thoughts about finishing).

After an hour or so I stopped for breakfast (I can never eat straight after getting up). I quickly caught the group back up and we proceeded to collectively make a bit of a hash of the navigation. We were never lost, or more than 50m off route, but kept loosing the path. The worst incident left me knee deep in a pile of dung. I decided that my navigational mojo works better when I’m on my own and sped up a bit, to get myself a bit of space.

On the field crossings North of Slaggyford I had my final Charlie ‘fly-by’ as he ran past me (on his hamburger feet), faster than I can move, when fresh, without a pack. I caught up with Rob and Gary (who I think had pulled ahead when I had yet another food/wee stop) and we stuck together across the fields and moors towards Greenhead. As the Sun came up we stopped on a roadside bench and had a snack. I was very jealous. While I took a packet of Ritz crackers from my ‘savoury pocket’ and a Mars bar from my ‘sweet pocket’, they both pulled out freshly made sandwiches. Just before Greenhead I was harassed by a flock of sheep who thought we were bringing them breakfast.

Rob’s support were waiting in Greenhead and I headed off to the Youth Hostel, which had been left unlocked for us, and proceeded to eat. I had an Expedition meal, a(nother) Mars bar, a Mule Bar and half a pack of cashew nuts. A total of 1100 calories. Gary then arrived to have a quick sleep and I regaled him with the details of my 1100 calorie breakfast/lunch. I wasn’t sure which it was. It was 10 o’clock in the morning, but we’d been on the move for nearly 10 hours already.

Feeling fairly perky I headed off along Hadrian’s wall. Having been blown off the wall on my recce, this was the one bit of the route I wasn’t familiar with. The weather was gorgeous though and, for the first and only time, I took my waterproof jacket off. The down-side of this was that every time I lifted my arms to climb over styles, I realised quite how much I stank. To my surprise I loved the short steep climbs, but as the day wore on the flat bits got a bit tedious and I started feeling really tired. I really didn’t like the fuggy headedness which the lack of sleep brought on. I like being able to think straight!

Towards the end of the wall I passed Javed and another runner, who’d stopped to change batteries. We had a quick chat where I moaned that physically I was fine, but mentally I was struggling and the super polite Javed asked if there was anything they could do to help and suggested I walked with them. However I suspected I was moving a bit faster than them (when I arrived at CP4 they were both having injuries treated before leaving) so I pressed on. In retrospect I wish I’d been a bit more grateful.

Not long after Conrad Dickinson appeared, in running gear, with a flask of hot drink. I’m guessing I was a bit incoherent as he asked me how much sleep I’d been getting and what my plans were for CP5. He told me I was first lady. I told him I wasn’t, but I didn’t care (at this point this was 100% the truth, all I cared about was finishing). He warned me about the deep water/bog coming up (‘It’d probably come up to your head’), and I told him I’d already been there and done that and would be testing the footing carefully with my pole. My final encounter on the wall was with the race photographers who were lying in wait in a chilly spot at the top of the final hill.

After the turn off the wall I avoided taking a dip in the bog. The subsequent forestry tracks were really tedious. I tried to sit on a tussock for a snack but it collapsed and I ended up on my back like an up-turned turtle. (I’d seen a photo of Annie in a similar position, at a similar point in last year’s race and had wondered what on Earth she was doing....) Sitting up seemed like too much effort and, since there was no-one around to see me, I started eating in this position. And then Rob and Gary appeared around the corner...

They were marching at a fast pace and I struggled, and failed, to keep up. Part way through the forest a black clad running ninja darted out of the trees. I wondered if this was my first proper hallucination. But no it was someone (Tony Holland from the Ultra Runner store I think) out supporting the race. He was waiting at the next road crossing with a boot full of stuff  you might want after 200+ miles of run/walking. I was extremely grateful for the caffeine gels he gave me, which made the remaining miles into Bellingham a little bit less of a struggle.

Next up was the infamous ‘mud road from hell’. Knowing this was coming made it a bit less of a shock. And I think the rain had actually made it a bit less horrific than it was back in December. Plus one of the advantages of being short is that I could avoid bits of it by crouching and shuffling under the trees. None the less I did swear out-loud (‘for fucks sake!’) a couple of times. By this stage in the race I’d also started swearing at some of the more unwieldy gates.

Pushing to try to catch up with Gary and Rob I made a minor navigational error, overshooting a bridge across a river. It cost me less than ten minutes, but I was annoyed that I didn’t realise sooner (since when did the Pennine Way involve limbo-ing under branches?). At this point I decided to give up on the chase and just plod.

Just before Bellingham Ruggiero (another runner who would have been hours in front of me if it wasn’t for injuries) caught and passed me. He proceeded to go in roughly the right direction, but kept missing the small trods and his presence was enough to disrupt my navigational mojo. So I was paradoxically happy when his head-torch disappeared into the distance.

When I arrived at CP5 Rob told me they’d only arrived 5 minutes before me. And I inadvertently came out with what was apparently the quote of the day: ‘I felt so much better once I’d dropped back from you guys’. Oops. I tried to back-pedal (‘I’ve only got one speed, and you were too fast...’).

This CP was quite small and a bit chaotic. 4 or 5 of us had arrived fairly close together, and there was another pack sleeping. Joe Falkner asked me what my priorities were. ‘Food and sleep’. All the beds were currently full. There was floor-space across the car park, but some of the runners currently sleeping were planning to leave in an about an hour, which was about as long as it would take to eat and sort kit.

There was gear strewn everywhere (jokes were made about teenage boys’ bedrooms and UV lights...).  I found myself a space in the corner and tried to sort my gear. Someone managed to drop/throw their mobile phone into someone else’s food. I had my biggest meal of the week- a huge plate of pasta bake. Since I was ‘the last vegetarian’ I was given everything which was left and I shovelled most of it down while talking to the OH on the phone. As the pack in front prepared to leave I commented that one of them’s drop-bag was nearly as big as mine. He wasn’t amused. Oops, again.

Just after I finished eating and sorting kit, Joe told me there was a bed free and I dragged my kit through to it. I don’t know what the previous occupant had done, but the pillows and sheets were soaked. The room only had 2 beds and thankfully the other one was taken by Ruggiero, who either didn’t snore, or didn’t sleep.
 

Spine: stage 4, I wish I had a willy

Just before my alarm clock was due to go off someone stuck their head into the dorm and announced that the cut-off was an hour and a half away. Time to get up and see if I was in a fit state to continue. To my surprise the food and 4 hours disturbed sleep had worked wonders. Within 5 minutes of getting up I was feeling fine, and there was no question: I was keeping going. While sorting my feet out, on a bit of a high, I waved my right foot at Scott and told him it was the best thing in the Universe (due to its lack of blisters). Despite the imminent cut-off there was a surprising number of people still in, or even arriving at, the checkpoint.

Heading out I broke into a jog. My legs and feet felt fine. In fact my knee/ITB felt better than it had since May. I wondered whether sleeping with my feet raised on my sock/underwear bag had helped. And then realised that my sock/underwear bag was still on the bed. Even the quick trip back to the CP to put it in my drop-bag didn’t spoil my mood. For the next 4 or 5 hours I was on a huge high and was (prematurely) convinced I was going to finish.

Dave and I had left the CP close together, but he’d moved ahead when I stopped for breakfast and a wee. After High Force he went slightly off course. He was too far ahead to shout back. I shone my head-torch in his direction, but he wasn’t looking the right way. I was glad to eventually see a head-torch back on course behind me. Somewhere along the Tees I passed what looked like an alien. An orange blob leant against a fence post. This, it later transpired, was  Michael, having a power-nap in his bothy bag.

On the tricky boulder falls before Cauldron Snout, Dave, Michael and a 3rd person caught and passed me. I’m crap on technical terrain, and my priority here was getting across in one piece, however slow it was. I wasn’t looking forward to Cauldron Snout but, having packed my poles away and picked out a route a little bit back from the falls, it didn’t seem too bad. Joe Falkner was loitering at the top, presumably to make sure we all got up in one piece.

When I got my poles back out I couldn’t get one of them back together and thought I’d broken it. When I got home it turned out it was fine, but from here on in I was on one pole, like a little old lady with a walking stick... I eventually caught Dave again, and then Michael having another nap, on the climb to High Cup Nick. It was snowing and I began wondering what Cross Fell was going to be like.

Snow on top of mud is a bit slippery, and I slipped and slid on my bum down towards the stream at the top of High Cup Nick. This was actually great fun. I managed to find the path on the other side quite quickly, but then we ended up on one of the minor, slightly more hairy, paths along the side of the valley.

I pushed the pace down into Dufton, trying to keep my body temperature up. A lot of the blogs from last year had mentioned sleeping in cars at Dufton, but there’d be no car waiting for me in Dufton. Instead I hatched a plan to head to the ladies toilets, put on some extra layers and have some hot food before heading up onto Cross Fell.

In fact when I arrived in Dufton a marshall (who I later discovered was Tom who’d had to drop out early on) told me that there were deep snow drifts before Cross Fell and therefore they were holding us in Dufton until dawn. Tom took me to the ladies toilets, where Thomas and Guido were asleep on the floor, having rigged the heater to stay on. I heated some water for a meal, spread my clothes out to dry and settled down in my sleeping bag for an hour or so of fitful sleep. Most of the rest of the support-crewless runners ended up cramming themselves into the bus shelter across the road. In retrospect we should have got more people into the, relatively cosy, women’s toilets.

Once dawn came we were allowed to continue, but in groups of 3. Tom suggested I went with Thomas and Guido, but this would have been suicide. They were far, far faster than me (and were only just in front of me only because of their numerous pub/cafe stops). In the end I was grouped with Dave & Michael, which made sense, since we’d arrived close together. However Michael was still in his sleeping bag and it was another half an hour before we left (although we were still only just behind the 2nd group to leave).

The weather on Cross Fell actually wasn’t too bad. By the time we got there most of the snow had melted or been blown away. It was windy and misty, but nowhere near as bad as it’d been on my recce. Staying together was a bit challenging though. Michael was struggling with an ankle injury while Dave needed to keep moving having chilled in damp clothes in the bus shelter. We managed it though (and kept up with the group in front).

Just after Cross Fell there’s a bothy, Greg’s hut, where John Bamber and Paul Shorrock would be waiting with hot drinks and noodles. In fact Paul, Kat the medic and Mist the dog came out to meet us, which was great. We stopped for maybe an hour and ate lots of noodles, chocolate and Kendal mint cake. However putting my hands back into wet merino gloves was very unpleasant and I made girly squeeing noises.

On the decent down to Garrigill I had to stop repeatedly to wee. Up until then I’d been going with my rucksack still on (to minimise the time taken). However tucking multiple layers of wet clothes back in, in the right order, under the rucksack was tricky. The final straw came when I tucked my wet jacket into my pants, creating a lovely damp, nappy sensation. This was the closest I came to crying on the race. From here on in I decided to take my rucksack off to wee. Yes it was slow, but less likely to cause a breakdown.

On the subject of rucksacks, during the first two few days I was very aware of it and constantly adjusting it. After that though, when it was on, I didn’t notice it was there. Lifting it up and getting it on was another story, however. Post race it took a week for me to stop grunting on picking up a rucksack...

On top of the toilet-stop frustrations I was running out of steam, and dropped back from the guys I’d left Greg’s hut with. On the final flat mile from Garrigill to the CP I stopped, leant against a wall, and cracked out my emergency caffeine gels. Just before the CP two of the guys came back along the path towards me, saying we needed to head up across a field to the checkpoint, despite a CP sign saying straight ahead. The path matched what I had marked on my map, so I convinced myself that maybe the sign had been turned around. It was really steep, but despite feeling crap I didn’t have any problems getting up it. So, looking on the bright-side, my feeling crap was a mental thing rather than a physical thing.

At the top of the path there was a farm house with no obvious footpath around it. We ended up sneaking through the garden, trying to avoid attracting the attention of the person we could see inside. The next morning the penny dropped.  We’d been told at the briefing that there was a farm with a farmer who ‘had a gun and dogs and wasn’t afraid to use them’, and hence we were to follow signs along a track rather than taking the route we’d previously been given through the farm. We lived to tell the tale, so no harm done.

We eventually found the CP safely, and then struggled to find the entrance... First job was to take wet-gear off and put it in the drying room. Which was full of what appeared to be children’s kayaking gear so this was more challenging than it sounds. Then it was time for food. Pasta bake was in the process of being made, but it wasn’t going to be ready for at least an hour. Random members of the support crew, plus runner’s support crews, were making toast but (I’m guessing it had to be cooked under the grill) it wasn’t coming out of the kitchen at a great rate. So I ate one of my Expedition meals as well. And was very jealous of someone whose support crew had brought take-out pizza.

I wasn’t eating as much at CPs as I’d anticipated, so I was rattling through my food supplies, in particular Mars bars. Thankfully Richard did a shopping trip for us, and I asked for some Mars bars. When he got back with my Mars bars he called me “Miss. Green”. Normally this would provoke a hissy fit where I snarl ‘It’s Ms. or Dr., not Miss.’. But instead I called him a hero because, frankly, he was.

While stuffing my face someone (I think it was Colin who I think I spent part of stage 3 with, but I was struggling to recognise people without their waterproof jackets on) asked whether I thought we were on course to finish within the time-limit.  Feeling less bullish than I did earlier, I replied that I wasn’t sure, but I was going to keep going at what felt like a comfortable pace rather than trying to push it. However thanks (I think at least in part) to the weather on Cross Fell, we’d caught up with people who’d previously been way in front. I could’t believe that I was in the CP at the same time as Gary Morrison and Mark Caldwell, Spine legends after they’d finished 1st and 3rd in the first race in 2012.

The mobile phone signal wasn’t great, but I managed to call the OH briefly. He told me that Mimi had dropped out. So, given the incorrect information I’d received at CP2, I wondered if this made me the last woman still going? Curiosity got the better of me and I got my iPhone out of my drop-bag to check the race standings. I discovered that actually Debbie was hours ahead of me (and was leaving the CP as I later headed to bed).

On the subject of being the first woman to finish, I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t thought about the possibility. And I’d have been happy if it happened (the small number of trophies I’ve accumulated over the past couple of years are proudly displayed in our sitting room). But being first woman is never  my main goal. With the small number of women who do really long stuff it depends hugely on who’s entered, and what sort of day (in this case week...) they have. And since I’ve only got one speed (slow) racing simply isn’t an option for me. With the British Ultra-fest 24 hour track race last Summer I knew that if everything went to form I’d accumulate more miles than the other women who’d entered. But with the Spine race realistically the only way I was likely to be first woman was if I was the last woman standing.

In fact at this point, given my earlier toilet stop woes, I really wished I wasn’t a woman. I vented my frustrations by telling everyone in ear-shot that it wasn’t fair that I didn’t have a willy, because weeing was much easier with a willy. I even calculated how much time not having a willy was costing me (several hours over the week I reckoned). Someone suggested a shee-wee, but I don’t think it would’ve helped. Not with so many layers of, fly-less, clothing.

And then I went to bed, in the empty, en-suite female dorm (there are some advantages to not having a willy...). I still couldn’t be bothered to take a shower though.
 

Spine: stage 3, plodding on fumes

I’d originally planned to leave CP2 at 10pm, but by 7pm I’d given up on sleeping. The toes on my left foot were looking a bit messy: a big blister on my little toe had formed and burst, the manky toe-nail on my 3rd toe was turning into a manky toe and the base of my big toe was sore. Time to see the doctors. But there was no sign of them-they’d been dispatched to the pub for dinner. I got my stuff ready to go and, just as I was deciding whether to try and sort my toes out myself, they returned.

The guy who treated my feet (Matt?) had originally been taking part in the race, but had had to drop out due to foot problems caused by the wet conditions. He was surprised my left foot was, in general, in as good condition as it was. He insisted I took my right sock off so he could have a look at that foot. Initially he thought it looked so good he was going to call the other medics over to have a look at it. But then he spotted swelling across the balls of the foot, which apparently could turn into blisters later on.

The fix for the blistered small toe was the usual padding with moleskin. The sore big toe was a blister deep under the callous (I hadn’t looked after it as well pre-race as the soles of my feet). It would probably need draining with a needle later on. For now the plan was just to tape it. However none of the medic teams’ tape would stick to my foot. At one point there were two doctors trying to get tape to stick to it. In the end we used some zinc oxide kit from my own first aid kit. The manky 3rd toe was more of a worry. What was wrong with it had a name (I don’t know whether it was the Latin for ‘manky toe-nail due to hacking at it with nail scissors’) and I was probably going to end up with an infected nail-bed which would need antibiotics. For now the treatment plan was to stick a needle in it, squeeze the pus out and slather it in Savalon. It hurt a bit. All of this took a while, in particular the trying to get tape to stick to my foot. Irrationally (since originally I hadn’t been planning to leave until 10) I got frustrated at the rate at which time was ticking by. (I hope I kept this to myself.) In the end nearly an hour passed between giving up on sleeping and leaving the CP. Just before leaving I found Scott to check I’d done the right thing in calling for help for the guy I’d found on the way into Hawes (apparently I had). I also whinged that I was worried that I hadn’t managed to get much sleep up till then.

Remembering last year’s tales of ‘9 layers of clothes on Great Shunner Fell’ I’d irrationally convinced myself it was going to be really cold, and put a base layer on under my tights. And, since it wasn’t raining when I left the CP, left my waterproof trousers off. 5 minutes later it started raining and I had to stop and put the waterproofs on. 15 minutes later I was over-heating and had to stop and take all of my lower-body layers off and remove the base layer. In the process I dropped it in a muddle, rendering it wet and unusable... This was my worst ‘kit fail’ of the week.

Toward the top of the climb to Great Shunner Fell it started snowing, making staying on the path a little tricky and the descent slippery (several people overtook as I inched my way down). On the fiddly field crossings after Thwaite I caught one of them (Colin?) again. We went slightly off course a couple of times (both times by turning right through tempting open gates too soon). The first time I convinced myself I recognised a field barn (highly improbable given the number of them in this area) and we needed to be on the other side of it. Luckily I was (accidentally) right. The 2nd time, according to our GPSs we weren’t far off the route, but there was a high wall topped with a barbed wire fence separating us from where we were supposed to be. We found a track going in the wrong direction. Looking at the map, this would connect with another track which headed back up towards the route. And, remembering a throw-away comment in one of the guidebooks about a tempting track heading the wrong way, I figured this would get us back on route, and it did.

The rocky paths and wall crossings on the way to Keld were hard-going, but at least they kept me awake. Just after Keld we passed two people bivvied out (in one case with an elaborate duck-tape, trekking pole set-up rigged up to shelter their head). I wondered if I should ask if they were OK, but convinced myself that it looked like they were, in which case the last thing they’d want was me waking them up.

The climb to Tan Hill dragged. I was feeling, really, really tired and I dropped right back from Colin. I’d somehow got it in my head that I could sleep at Tan Hill and used this as a carrot to keep going. Someone came out from the marshalling point to meet me. I told him I really needed a couple of hours sleep. He broke the news that they only had access to the porch of the pub and there was nowhere I could sleep. I said (in a lame attempt at a joke) that  I could ‘make like the Germans and sleep on the floor of the ladies toilets’. But apparently there was only one toilet.

This was probably my lowest point of the week. In the pub porch I fumbled with my kit, drunk a coffee, ate as much as I could and tried to ‘man up’. Quite a few people had converged at this point. One offered me some ProPlus. I declined as I was worried it would stop me sleeping at the next CP (which was a bit irrational as it would take at least another 7 or 8 hours to get there). Someone else mentioned there was a shooting hut half-way to the CP so I set off with this as an intermediate goal.

After Tan Hill there’s an infamous long stretch of bog. This was just the challenge I needed to wake me up. In the dark/mist I managed to pick the marker poles and path out (keeping my headtorch on a low setting and sweeping it from side to side seemed to be an effective way of doing this). I ended up with a bit of a pack following me, and I shouted happily ‘we’ve made it!’ when we hit the track at the end.

Ian caught up with me here (he’d been one of the pair we’d passed bivving after Keld) and we chatted for the next few miles. His enthusiasm for the race, and positivity about my prospects of finishing, buoyed my mood hugely. Just after dawn, by the tunnel under the A66, I stopped to shovel some more food down. Ian, and some of the rest of the pack from the bog, pulled ahead and I struggled to keep up with them across the moors. I spotted a hat by the path and, remembering reading about Ian loosing his hat last year, I guessed it was his and picked it up. Initially I carried it, but then decided I needed to store it more securely. Feeling fuggy-headed, attaching it to one of the karabiners on my ruck-sack seemed to take forever. At the shooting hut I decided to press-on, on the grounds that a longer sleep at the CP would be better than two short sleeps.

Just before Balderdale I followed the pair in front slightly off route and my mood crashed again. Michael caught me and (seemingly with energy to burn) took several photos. I don’t like having my photo taken at the best of times. He told me he’d email the photos to me ‘for your children’. I didn’t have the strength to tell him that the closest thing I have to a child is an elderly, bad-tempered, lop-eared rabbit, who wouldn’t be very impressed by them. But if I had to stop at CP3 they would, I thought, at least provide evidence of quite how bad a state I’d been in. He offered to check how many miles there were to the CP for me. I didn’t want to know, I knew the answer would just make me miserable. There was nothing for it but to keep putting one foot in front of the other until I got there.

My stomach was growling. I kept eating, but it felt like trying to keep a fire going using paper. I’d feel better for a few minutes, but then ‘puff’ the fire had gone out again. A couple of miles out Richard (who’d dropped out of the race due to hypothermia) was running a roadside monitoring point from his car. He told me the biggest lie anyone has every told me (‘you’re doing great’) and offered me a bewildering range of food. I took a Rocky Road mini-bite and, fuelled by this, recaught the pair in front as they struggled with a style. I probably didn’t help matters by telling them there was an nasty wall style coming up (sorry...).

As Middleton-in-Teesdale, and CP3, got closer I started feeling better. At the top of the final descent Dave, who’d bivvied out with Ian, caught me. He told me (jokingly I think) that I might have beaten him to Hawes, but I wasn’t beating him to Middleton. I was surprised that it’d taken so long for him to catch me, and we made our way into Middleton together. We got to the CP at around 2- the time I’d originally been aiming for, despite my earlier departure from Hawes. This stage had been a very long, very slow, slog.

While I was feeling a bit better than I had earlier, I still wasn’t sure I was in a fit state to continue. I decided to get as much sleep and food down as I could and see how I felt when the cut-off for leaving the checkpoint arrived. I had a decent sized piece of veg lasagne and chased this down with 6 pieces of toast. I phoned the OH to tell him my plans, but didn’t sort my kit, there’d be no need if I wasn’t continuing. Just before going to bed I went to the toilet and was horrified by what I saw in the mirror. With great big bags under my eyes and red weather-beaten skin I looked just like my (70 year old) dad. I also had loads of small white spots along the sides of my nose.

Nici had tipped me off about a warm, quiet dorm. I slept better than at the previous checkpoints, but was woken by someone who came in to wake one of the other runners and sat on my head.
 

Spine: stage 2, the long one

On the climb out of the CP I was surprised to find there were people still headed in (last year almost everybody had already left by now). There were a lot of speedy runners still in the CP when I left though, so I was expecting a stream of people to come past me during the morning. First up were ‘the Germans’ (Thomas, Michael and Guido, who’s actually Swiss) moving at high speed with Steve in hot pursuit. Just like last year it was a beautiful morning, and various fell runners were out and about. Their positive comments were a boost, but it was depressing how much faster they were moving than me. Ian caught me just before Top Withins and, after a brief stop there to remove layers and check feet, he pressed on aiming for a cafe just off route.

Another group, including Dave and Annie, came past on the flagstones across Icornshaw moor and I was a bit depressed by how fast they pulled away from me. I eventually caught one of them, Alan who was doing the Challenger, and spent a while with him. We had the usual ‘where exactly do you come from with that accent?’ conversation (I get a bit bumpkiny when I’m tired). To my surprise this was the only time someone asked the question. Does my accent get less broad again when I get really tired? Or does it deteriorate so much there’s no need to ask? (Hopefully I wasn’t greeting people with ‘ow be yon’ me lover’.) Alan stopped for a meal in Lothersdale, while I pressed on. My plan was to keep going while the Sun was up and stop later for dinner at Garsdale.

Just before Garsdale it started raining, which made me feel unreasonably miserable and I was glad to stop at a pub and get out of it. True to form ‘the Germans’ were there on (at least) their 2nd pub stop of the day. I ordered veg lasagne and chips. ‘Do you want the chips as well as or instead of the garlic bread?’ ‘As well as.’ I sat by the fire and phoned the OH while waiting for my food. A couple of other runners came in to eat. The locals seemed somewhat intrigued/perplexed by us. All told I was stopped for nearly an hour, but felt so much better for it. Despite sitting by the fire I got a bit cold and put an extra layer on.

Just up the road Annabel was manning another monitoring point. Apparently Dave and Andy had passed through a few minutes before and had been a bit concerned that I hadn’t been through before them. This time, with my pub food stop, I had a good excuse for what had taken me so long. I soon caught them and, thinking that 3 heads would be better than 1, we more or less stuck together for the tricky, boggy fields on the way to Malham. This turned out to be the case. A couple of times my route memory kept us on track. I stopped under a bridge to take off the extra layer I’d added in the pub and was surprised to see headtorches coming back along the route. It turned out they couldn’t find a small gate in the corner of the field and thought they’d gone off-route.  Dave’s GPS (a SatMap with a much better basemap than my Garmin) guided us back to a tiny wall crossing which we’d missed and at one point he called me back when I overshot a bridge across the river. I’d missed this on both my recce and last year’s race, and now had an explanation for why on both occasions I’d ended up floundering around in marshland.

Feeling perky, thanks to my pub meal, I pulled away on the last stretch into Malham. In retrospect Malham would have been a better place to stop & bivvy, but I wanted to keep going for a bit longer while I felt good and pressed on to CP 1.5 at Malham tarn. I did try and stop for the loo, but couldn’t get in as ‘the Germans’ were setting up camp. I was somewhat disgruntled at instead having to go al fresco in the rain (I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me go in the men’s loos instead).

I picked a better route across the limestone pavement at the top of Malham Cove than I’ve managed before. There was a bit of crawling on all fours and shuffling on my bum, but this time I wasn’t worried that I’d fall down a gap and break my leg. Up at Malham Tarn the weather was wet and windy but, looking on the brightside, nowhere near as bad as had been forecast. I was expecting to find a sea of tents and bivy bags at the CP, but in fact there was just one, and one person trying to sleep on chairs in the CP tent. I set my bivvy bag up and, after some jogging on the spot, crawled in. I’ve bivvied out in far worse conditions, but for some reason I struggled to sleep much. The intermittent noise as other people passed through the CP didn’t help.

At about 4.30am I gave up on sleeping, packed up and headed for Hawes. This was a couple of hours later than last year, so I hadn’t lost any more time since stage 1. On Fountains Fell I caught up with a pair, including Alan who I’d been with the afternoon before, and, just like the day before, ‘the Germans’ charged past me. Apart from this (and Joe Falkner in a car at the road-head before Pen-y-Ghent) I didn’t see anyone else until just before Hawes.

Perhaps thanks to my climbing lessons, Pen-y-Ghent didn’t seem anywhere near as bad as last year. The long climb up to Cam High Road was as tedious as ever, and this year Hawes was just another CP and not the finish. I was beginning to get tired, and stopped and sat down to eat several times. Usually I eat on the move, but these short breaks made me feel better and also allowed me to get more food down. Like last year I kept seeing things on the horizon and initially wondering if they were something else (last year it was clumps of snow-covered grass and sheep, this year gate-posts and people). There was a camper-van waiting at the top and I got confused about whether it was an official monitoring point (I didn’t want to miss another one and risk getting penalised).

Reminiscing about my Challenger finish last year, I was looking forward to jogging the descent into Hawes. However early on I came across someone stopped a bit off-route, rummaging in his bag. I shouted over to ask if he was OK. He said he wanted to drop and asked how far was it to Hawes. I pointed at Gayle in the valley, and said Hawes was just a mile after that. I told him that I knew the route and he should follow me down. I headed off and a couple of minutes later looked back, to see him still stood there rummaging in his bag. I then realised that he was in a worse state than I’d initially thought. 

I headed back up and asked if he wanted some food. He said yes, if I had some to spare, which I did. I asked if he wanted Hula Hoops or a Mule Bar. He seemed flummoxed by the choice, so I gave him a Mule Bar. It turned out he’d been trying to use his phone to call race HQ. I asked if he’d like me to phone them and ask them to pick him up from the road-head. He said yes. The food seemed to have perked him up a bit, so I set him off on the route down and got my phone out. Initially there was no signal, and then the first number I called went through to answer-phone, but finally I got through. Thanks to the trackers they could see where we were and said they’d send someone out. A photographer from Sport Sunday offered to take over walking him off the hill, and I continued my slow jog down to Hawes. In the midst of all this someone flew by wearing shorts and carrying a huge rucksack. I later discovered this was the super-speedy Charlie who (after being close to the front of the field on day 1) had had a long stop at CP1.5 due to hallucinations and trashed feet. A little bit later I encountered Scott and Stuart on their way to the rescue.

This incident shook me up a bit. The weather wasn’t that bad, and we were really close to civilisation. What if something similar happened in bad conditions, somewhere remote?

On arriving at Hawes I attempted to do some shopping. This didn’t go entirely smoothly. First I went to the two outdoor gear shops. Both of my pairs of waterproof gloves had leaked and I wanted to get some new ones, ideally (I somewhat over-ambitiously decided) Goretex with Primaloft insulation. Not the sort of thing small shops in a small town stock. Then I went to the Coop. Having run my food supplies down due to the sparse food at CP1 I’d been planning to buy a lot of food. But the supermarket was small, with narrow aisles which seemed to be full of small children. So I just grabbed a handful of Mars bars. When someone finally came to serve me at the checkout they made some comment about me having finished now. ‘No. I’m going on to Scotland.’ Judging by the look on their face I think they thought I was making this up.  And then a small boy told me off  for buying so many Mars bars.

The CP was really crowded, and somewhat confused I just stood in the doorway. Some people must have thought I was doing the Challenger and started clapping. Nici came over and sorted me out with a chair and my over-sized drop-bag. She also warned me that I needed to keep one eye on the cut-off for leaving CP3. But I (naively) already had a plan. It was now about 4pm. I’d eat, get four hours sleep and leave at about 10pm, with the goal of getting to CP3 by 2pm the next day, giving me another 6 hours to eat and sleep there before the cut-off.

The food was a bit sparse again, but this time I was sensible and also ate one of my Expedition meals. While it was cooking I phoned the OH. One of his friends, who’s a fast ultra-runner, was following the race online and had texted him excitedly, telling him that various decent runners were either behind me or had dropped out. He also (incorrectly I later discovered) thought I was 2nd placed woman at this point. I said that I was fairly sure that most of the people behind me would either drop-out or be timed-out (given that I was going to be pushing the mid-way cut-off), but I’d be happy to finish last. Because that would mean I’d finished.

I spread my damp gear all over the place before heading behind the curtain on the hall stage to sleep. I managed a couple of hours, but my ear-plugs couldn’t block out the noise from the hall, in particular the clapping as people doing the Challenger race finished.

Spine: stage 1, a slow start

After a disturbed night’s sleep (I kept dreaming I’d missed the start) we drove over to Edale. I was experiencing a huge feeling of foreboding. The scale of what I was about to try and do was completely overwhelming. I tried to focus on my plan: take it stage by stage, and keep going for as long as I was on target to make the cut-offs and (mostly) having fun. Stay safe, have fun and (if everything goes to plan) jog into Kirk Yetholm in the style of Mick Cooper in the early hours of next Saturday morning,

The village hall was chaos, so I was glad to be able to sit in the car with the OH in the quiet away from all the faffing. At one point he said ‘we should do this more often’. It turned out he meant him come to race starts with me, not sit in car parks in the dark.

The start was delayed due to the logistics of getting paperwork completed, kit checked and GPS trackers fitted to ~130 runners (~80 doing the full Spine race and ~50 the shorter Challenger).

Just before the race started it began to rain, so I put my waterproof gloves and trousers on. Then it stopped and I took them off again. And then it started again so I was struggling to get waterproofs on again as the race started (so much for my pride in avoiding last minute faffing). At this point I discovered a kit issue. My favourite jacket had given up the ghost on my last recce, and I’d bought a (supposedly identical) replacement. But the newer model had a different cut and I couldn’t get the hood to wrap around my face, leaving it exposed to the elements.

As we crossed the fields out of Edale the rain turned to sleet and then snow, and lots of runners stopped to put on more kit, so I had more company at the back than last year. Before Kinder Scout the little finger of one of my previously trusty waterproof gloves started leaking. Hmm, not a great start on the kit front.

On top of Kinder Scout the guy in front kept stopping dead and taking photos of me, which was really irritating. I also started worrying about whether the OH was going to get home safely if it was snowing in the valleys. Heading down to Mill Hill I fell off the back of the pack I was with, but I wasn’t bothered. Staying on my feet was more important than speed. And soon after I came across the first casualty of the slippery flagstones being helped to the road crossing at Snake pass and an early bath.

Across Bleaklow the weather improved, and there were many more people around me than last year so I was feeling pretty happy. There was a monitoring point at Torside reservoir and someone asked me how I was feeling. ‘Great’ I responded (in all seriousness). ‘Seriously, how are you feeling, do you need medical attention?’. Which was a bit perturbing.

A bit later on I phoned home to check the OH had got back OK (I’d been imagining having to DNF because he’d been in a car crash). He was a bit surprised. It hadn’t snowed in the valley and he’d had an easy drive out following one of the race vehicles. Attempting to drink and talk at the same time I dropped one of my water bottles (valve down) into some agricultural bog (i.e. cow shit). Luckily I’d almost drunk all of the water it contained.

On the way to Black Hill the density of ‘runners’ was still quite high and there was a fair bit of overtaking, and being overtaken, going on. One guy, when I stepped aside to let him by on a technical section of trail, commented that he was struggling too. Too? Thanks, I’m just plodding along at my usual slow speed. In fact taking it easy on the flats and ups was part of the plan. In the Challenger last year I’d put on extra layers going over Kinder Scout, but then didn’t want to waste time taking them off and ended up arriving at CP1 drenched in sweat and shivering. This year the plan was to regulate my body temperature by varying how hard I was working. A rivulet of sweat running down my front would be a sign I needed to ease off.

After Black Hill there was ice on the flagstones. I couldn’t be bothered to get my YakTraks out so I tried to walk along the tussocks by the size of the path, which was almost certainly slower than stopping and putting the YakTraks on. I’d hoped to get to the road crossing before dark (last year I’d got to almost Wessenden head in the daylight) but had to stop and put my head-torch on. Only to discover it didn’t work as I’d put the batteries in wrong (a timely lesson, and from here on in I checked it worked after every battery change).

The race briefing had said there would be no water until the White House pub, so I’d filled my bottles up with 1.75 l of water. One of the support crew at Torside had, however, been telling people that there would be water at the next road-head. A lot of people were disappointed to find that there wasn’t, and wouldn’t be for quite some time, and I ended up giving away some of my supplies.

The subsequent moor crossings went slowly because of the mud. I did overtake a slow moving group on the steep climb after Wessenden though (the stair climbing and hill repeat sessions must have done their job, I’m usually the world’s worst climber). My knee was worrying me though. The inside was sore on the flats and climbs, and the outside was sore, border-line painful, on the downhills.

At this point I was with 2 veterans from last year’s race (Annie & Tom). Annie had energy to spare (and kept pulling ahead) but Tom was really not feeling well. In the mist we were keeping a close eye out for the right turn on Cattleshaw moor. It turned out to be easy to find, due to the group of people looking for the path having found the marker stone. The mist was so dense it took a while for me to spot the stone (‘it’s there, right next to you’), but then finding the path was easy.

We lost the path just before Blackstone edge, heading a little left, but this year I avoided dropping too low after the trig point. Like last year I didn’t stop at the White House (just got a top up of water from Ali & Amanda) thinking that there would be substantial food waiting at CP1.

Thanks to the mud I was an hour and a half slower than last year to this point, but the 10 or so miles to the checkpoint didn’t involve mud/bog so should have been OK. If I hadn’t got over-confident with my navigation. Up to here I’d had no problem navigating by memory and I knew that after the reservoirs there was a left turn onto flagstones heading to Stoodley Pike. The mist cleared a bit and in the distance I could see something lit up. For some reason I assumed it was Stoodley Pike (even though it’s never been lit up in the past). And when I saw a left turn onto flagstones headed towards it, I took it (even though it wasn’t sign-posted as the Pennine Way). I happily motored along the flagstones, until I saw some ducks. ‘That’s a bit weird, ducks shouldn’t be in a bog. Hang on, that’s not a bog, that’s a reservoir. And I’m not where I think I am.’ Getting my map out I discover that I’d turned left too soon, and had headed a mile or so in the wrong direction. I could regain the Pennine Way by keeping going, but I didn’t want to risk taking a short-cut (or worry anyone who was watching my tracker). So I back-tracked and berated myself for my idiocy. Again this was a salutary lesson, and I was far more careful with the navigation from here on in.

I caught a couple of people I’d passed before again in the next few miles, but was irritated that a lot of the people I’d painstakingly overtaken during the afternoon/evening were now ahead of me again. After Stoodley Pike the gravel track was really slippery and I had to stop and put the YakTraks on. Before taking them off again for the track down to Hebden Bridge. I was going to have to improvise a way of attaching them to outside of my rucksack to minimise the time taken in getting them on and off. Thankfully I had a handful of karabiners waiting in my drop-bag at CP1.

At the briefing we’d been told there would be penalties for not having our race numbers taken at monitoring points, and that if marshals were asleep we should wake them. I wasn’t expecting to encounter sleeping marshals until later in the race when runners would be hours, rather than minutes, apart. So I didn’t know what to do when I found a car in the valley with a race marshall bib on the bonnet and someone asleep inside. I shone my headtorch in. Still no sign of life. In the end timidity won over paranoia and I didn’t try hammering on the windows.

The field crossings and roads to CP1 were a bit slippery, but nowhere near as treacherous as on the training weekend (when I’d ended up crawling across one road on all fours). Just before CP1 Annabel (the first female Spine race finisher last year) was running a monitoring point. After giving my number she asked ‘is that Anne?-are you OK where’ve you been?’.  I tried to deflect the question with ‘I’m fine, just slow as usual’. But in the end I had to admit my navigational snafu.

I finally got to CP1 at about 3.30, 2 hours later than last year. Scott (one of the RDs) kindly carried my oversized (but definitely under the weight limit...) drop-bag upstairs for me, while I told him about my lawn-mower induced ITB problems. First job was to get some food. Last year the food at CPs 1 and 2 had been great. Huge, tasty meals and lots of snacks. This year, as a veg I got a small slice of aubergine stuffed with rice and I ended up raiding my stage 2 cold pizza supplies.

The CP was chaos. Drop-bags everywhere and people hobbling around with injuries sustained from falls on the flagstones. I sorted my kit, repacking with heavier duty kit for the long stage 2, and then found myself a space, on the top of a bunk-bed. I don’t know if it was me being dim, but I couldn’t spot a ladder so I ended up standing on the lower bunk (while trying not to stand on its occupant) and hauling myself up like a fish trying to get out of water. Having succeeded in not getting sweaty I stripped my upper layers off and crawled into my sleeping bag in my base layers.

I’m not very good at getting to sleep at the best of times (getting my brain to switch off is difficult). And a checkpoint full of snoring runners is definitely not the best of times. Last year I’d struggled to sleep at all at CP1 and headed back out after a couple of hours. This year thanks to ear-plugs, which I’d spent weeks training myself to use (I hate having them in my ears), I managed to get a couple of hours of sleep. I’d set my alarm for 7.00, but before then so many people were moving around it was impossible to sleep, so I decided to call it a night and head off.

My manky toe-nail was sore and inflamed and I’d have liked to get the medics to look at it. But there was a long queue for blister dressing, so I decided to tape it up myself and hope for the best. A DNF due to a self-inflicted dodgy toe-nail would be very, very embarrassing.
 

Spine: the week before

I’m usually pretty organised. Weeks in advance I made packing lists and piled my gear up in the spare room. But I turned into a headless chicken in the week before the race.

On Monday I randomly decided to get a ‘race haircut’. Not quite the ‘very short all over’ most of the rest of the entrants would be sporting (I didn’t want to scare people). I told the hairdresser to ‘cut it as short as you can without it looking really silly, its spending the next week under a hat’.

The main problem was the medical certificate. I dropped it off at the doctors in early December and then it disappeared into an administrative black hole. After numerous phone-calls and visits to the surgery (‘No you can’t just make an appointment with a nurse to fill it in. It’s with the doctor.’) I found a private GP who was willing to fill it in (for £50 for a grand total of 5 minutes work). He told me I looked ‘very fit’. Just as my ego was puffing up, he followed this up with ‘I had a bloke in with one of these forms earlier in the week. He looked like action man’. He declared my heart-rate and blood pressure excellent, but actually both were higher than usual (due, possibly, to the stress of getting the form completed).

For some reason I’d decided I wouldn’t pack my drop-bag until I had the form signed. So on Wednesday night I started cramming stuff into my large North Face holdall. And it wouldn’t all go. I was also flying close to the 20 kg weight limit (as far as I could tell by standing on the bathroom scales holding stuff Crackerjack style). Cue a panicked order of an extra large holdall and some baggage scales to collect from Cotswold Outdoor the next day. I finally got around to packing on Friday morning and, after culling a couple of items, my drop bag weighed in at 19.6 kg.

In the midst of all this I popped over to the physics tea-room to chat to Jenn Gaskell about the race. We burbled over-excitedly at each other while some of the rest of the physics department looked at us as if we were slightly deranged.

Living in Chesterfield, I’d been a bit complacent about booking accommodation in Edale for the Friday night. By the time I emailed the Peak Centre they were full, and I was a bit nervous about staying at the Castleton Youth Hostel as I’d have to rely on getting lifts to and from Edale. At this point the other half (OH) suggesting getting a hotel in Castelton and he’d come over to the start with me.

We headed over to Edale late on Friday afternoon and I left the OH in the pub while I went to the 6pm briefing. This was shorter than last year’s and involved less focus on the different ways in which you could die. I did manage to disgrace myself though. Conrad Dickinson called on various participants from previous years to talk about their experiences. The first two duly provided stories of near death experiences on the Cheviots. He then looked at me. “You did the race last year didn’t you?”. “Not the whole thing” (I tried to deflect the question). “How did you find it?” “I just did the Challenger, (pause) which wasn’t that bad actually. (bigger pause) I’m not supposed to say that am I?”

Kit check was from 6.30 on race morning, but you could get it done on Friday night if you then left your rucksack in the hall overnight. So, to reduce the amount of stuff I had to do in the morning and the OH’s complaints about getting up early, I got mine done. Kit check brings out my worst girly swot tendencies. I don’t just want to pass, I want to impress with how well organised me and my kit are. And I went into flap mode. I’m guessing the kit checker was wondering how on Earth I was going to cope with the Pennine Way in Winter if kit check had this effect on me. He was impressed with my water bottle insulation and blister repair kit though...

Back to the pub to collect the OH and we headed over to Castelton, checked into the hotel and had an excellent meal at the 1530 restaurant. Getting away from the hubbub in Edale was just what I needed.  I’ve finished some fairly serious ultras over the past few years, but (not really looking like your stereotypical ultra runner) I still feel out of place at race starts.

Spine: kit

I’m a little bit obsessive (I’m a theoretical physicist...) so I actually enjoyed the process of finding kit that worked for me.

Since finishing safely, and not racing, was my focus I wasn’t too obsessed with weight. But I did try and reign in my ‘everything but the kitchen sink’ tendencies, and cut my starting pack weight down from 10kg (for the Challenger last year) to 9kg, including food and water.  

The one mistake I made was testing kit to breaking point, leading to a couple of panic replacements in the weeks beforehand, one of which didn’t work as well as the original.

This combination did a pretty good job of keeping my feet blister free. The first pair of SealSkinz leaked horrendously (despite only having been worn once and hand-washed carefully) but the second did their job. The boots were good for grip and stability, but had a bit more cushioning, and were more robust, than the 286s I wore last year. Think they’ve been discontinued though. I changed to a pair a half size larger at CP2 (bought half price from Sport Pursuit). The biggest challenge was finding some gaiters with underfoot straps which were robust enough to last a week on the Pennine Way but weren’t slippery on the flagstones.

I bought a lighter Terra Nova Voyager pack, but it was nowhere near as comfy (or as robust) so I switched back to this workhorse. Never quite needed to fill it. The one plus side of having broad shoulders is that unisex packs fit me OK.
The front pack was pretty much essential for carrying map, GPS, snacks etc. It was one of the items I had to replace at the last minute having trashed the original.

Since I knew the route fairly well this combination worked OK. I only used the GPS for checking location and the compass function when crossing featureless terrain. Navigating off of the map screen doesn’t really work (c.f. my going around in circles episode after checkpoint 1.5 last year). Something with a 1:25000 scale would have been useful for some of the fiddlier field crossings. Sections of OS map would probably be the best bet. The base map on the SatMap GPSs looks good, but at least some models come with a rechargable internal battery, which would be a faff.

The Cypher jacket had been my workhorse ‘really bad weather’ jacket for several years, but the seam taping came off en masse during my final long weekend recce. I bought a replacement online (painfully paying nearly RRP), however it seems they’ve changed the cut of the hood and whatever I did I couldn’t get it to cover my face (my head’s big but not that big...).

I put the Mammut jacket in my drop bag in case I decided to use the Buffalo smock (as the OMM jacket wouldn’t fit over the top of it). I didn’t, but used the Mammut jacket instead of the OMM for a day mid-week. It kept my face protected, but the cuffs wouldn’t go over my Buffalo mitts and it didn’t cover my bum properly so it got cold and wet. Bum trumped face and I switched back to the OMM jacket.

The Kamleika pants were on their last legs after 4 years of fairly extensive use. By day 6 they were falling to pieces and I switched to my heavier duty back-up waterproof trousers. Should have got a new pair before-hand.

Spine: preparation

My Spine race preparation started long before I even entered the race. I entered the shorter Challenger event in 2013 with one eye on the main race, treating it as a test run. It went fairly well, and by finishing 1st woman (out of 2) I bagged a free entry for the 2014 race. I just wasn’t 100% sure I definitely wanted to do it. The events towards the end of the 2013 race, when a blizzard hit on the Cheviots, scared me. I wasn’t confident I’d make the right decisions (i.e. drop out if appropriate) in those circumstances.

I spent the Spring doing things to improve my confidence in my ability to handle the hills in Winter conditions. A winter skills course at Plas y Brenin (not really relevant to the Spine, but useful in general and fun) and a Mountain Running Essentials course with
Nav4 Adventure (which was great, and I wish I’d done it years ago). I even had some climbing lessons to try and make the scrambly bits (Pen y Ghent and Cauldron Snout) seem a bit less scary.

I didn’t officially confirm my entry until September, at which point I wasn’t doing much running and had had to pull the plug on a training run/walk on the Pennine Way at Stanedge, a paltry ~24 miles in. On top of my existing knee injury I’d dropped a lawn-mower on my ITB and descending was really painful. Through the Autumn I had regular sessions with John at
Holywell Health, and did lots of strengthening exercises.

I don’t know quite how little running I did (I deliberately hid my Garmin). However it was probably less than 50 miles. Not per week, but total in the 5 months between the track race in August & the Spine (one painful 20 mile run and a handful of 3-4 milers).

I wasn’t too worried about the lack of running though. The Spine Race doesn’t involve much running (at the back of the pack at least). Instead my training consisted of weekly hill repeat and stair climbing sessions (both with a 10 kg rucksack). Plus lots of time on the turbo trainer in the garage and some weekends on the route:

i) Hawes-just south of Harter Fell and back
I drove to Hawes after work on Friday night, slept at a camp-site in Hardraw (I never like bivy-ing out before a run/walk) and then headed North. The weather on Saturday was miserable in the morning and I stopped for lunch (coffee and crisps...) at Tan Hill. In the afternoon, after the never ending bog, the Sun came out for a bit, and I broke a gate. I didn’t want to be too late home on Sunday, so I turned around just South of Middleton and headed back to the preceding moor where I bivvied at the wall junction at Race Yate in pouring rain.

The next morning I made the silliest navigation mistake I’ve ever made. I knew where I was going, so I set off without checking the map/compass or GPS. The ground under foot was boggier than I remembered, but I convinced myself this was because of the heavy rain. After about half an hour, when I didn’t reach the river, I realised something had gone wrong. I headed for a high-point to try and find some features I could relocate myself from. But there was nothing, featureless bog as far as the eye could see. I got out the GPS and found myself, more than a mile off the route. I’d followed the wrong wall and headed off at 90 degrees to the way I should have been going. Half an hour of self-admonishment and plodding through bogs back to the Pennine Way followed.

After this misadventure I was running short of time and (after another coffee at the Tan Hill Inn) I headed back to Hawes along roads rather than the Pennine Way.  My waterproof socks had leaked and, after a weekend of being marinaded in bog water, the road slog produced a massive blister across the ball of one of my feet. Finally, to really top things off, I must have drunk some dodgy water at some point. Two days later I had chronic diarrhea, which took a fortnight to clear up, by which time I’d lost 2 kg and had no energy.

ii) official Spine training weekend
This came at the end of the diarrhea, and I felt so crap I nearly didn’t go. The talks were really useful. A lot of the stuff I already knew (from the Challenger or my weekends in the hills), but I did pick up several useful tips (in particular moleskin for blister care and putting a sleeping bag in the drop bag for checkpoints). The Mary Townley Loop was a battle though. I had no energy and was struggling to eat. At 10 miles I thought there was no way way I could finished and warned the organisers I might have to drop later on. But I felt a bit better as the day went on and by the end (I was in the last group to finish at 2am...) I actually felt pretty good.

iii) Middleton-Dufton and back
I wussed out of camping the night before and stayed at a hotel in Middleton (with a lovely chocolate brown bathroom suite). After heading South to fill in the gap from my last recce, it was West along the Tees. In contrast to my last recce the weather was fine and the views (Low Force, High Force, Cauldron Snout) were stunning. Scrambling up the side of Cauldron Snout was a bit scary though. I made it to High Cup Nick at dusk and dropped into Dufton for a quick coffee at the pub. Where the locals warned me of the dangers of wandering around on my own so late at night-apparently I could have fallen down High Cup Nick. I didn’t tell them what I was planning to do next... Which was head back up into the fells and bivvy by Cow Green reservoir, before heading back to Middleton by road and home for just after lunch.

iv) Dufton-Kirk Yetholm
The moment term ended for Christmas I packed my bags and headed off to bag the rest of the route. I got the train to Appleby and walked to Dufton, getting there for lunchtime. Cross Fell lived up to it’s reputation. Misty, and very, very windy (when it caught my rucksack at the wrong angle I’d get blown around). I jogged down to Garrigill to warm up, and found my way through the fiddly field crossings to Alston. The Youth Hostel was full, but they let me bivvy in their garden (much to the amusement of the wives of the middle-aged golfers who’d booked the hostel).

The field crossings and moors en route to Greenhead seemed to take forever and I didn’t get there until early afternoon. After a meal at the pub I set off along Hadrian’s wall. I’d been planning to get as close as I could to Bellingham, but not long after dark a gale hit and I was literally getting blown off the wall. So I headed for the road, and stopped for the night early at the Once Brewed youth hostel. It was good to get my gear dry, but I was worried about what the Cheviots would have in store.

Next morning, in the dark, I actually managed to temporarily lose the wall and end up in a bog. I then encountered a bad tempered farmer’s wife who wanted to know what I was doing out scaring the sheep at this time of day. And then, while on a section of submerged flagstones, one of my feet went off the side and I ended up waist deep in cold water. Not the best start to the day. The forest tracks generally made for fast going though, apart from the mud road from hell. A short stretch of foot deep flooded ruts, which took 15 mins of stumbling and swearing.

After Bellingham came into view it seemed to take for ever to actually get there. I stopped for lunch at the coop, grabbing armfuls of sandwiches, crisps and Mars bars. I don’t usually eat Mars bars (too sweet and icky) but I had a craving for them. After eating most of the food sat on a bench, I headed for the hills and more forestry tracks, fuelled by regular Mars bar breaks. The forestry tracks really dragged and it started raining heavily. Soaking wet I really didn’t want to camp but there was a ‘closed’ sign on the door of Forest View in Byrness so I thought I was going to have to. Until a passer-by knocked on the door and Joyce kindly opened up for me. Not only did I get a proper room for the night, she even dried my clothes and I bought even more Mars bars from her food cupboard.

I was unsure about heading off on the 27 mile stretch over the Cheviots in bad weather, but (having identified potential escape routes) decided to give it a go. Getting to the first refuge hut was a long slog in the rain (and I needed all my layers to stay warm). But then the Sun came out, it was a gorgeous day and the rest of the ridge flew by. The descent into Kirk Yetholm dragged, but I finally got there at 6 (roughly 12 hours after leaving Byrness). And celebrated by getting a room (they gave me the Pennine suite complete with reception room, which I tried not to cover in mud), a pint and a meal.

The muddiness of the route had me worried.  My rough plan was to spend ~18 hours a day moving at 2.25 miles an hour (giving a total of 40 miles a day and 6 hours for eating/sleeping/faffing). But the conditions underfoot were making it hard to keep up this speed. Would I still be able to do it after 4 or 5 days? And I was also troubled by the number of layers I had had to wear to keep warm in really not too cold weather and the amount of weight (2.5 kg) I lost over the 3.5 days.

My knee was fine throughout the final recce, so I thought it was sorted. Until I made the mistake of standing on a moving train with a big rucksack on (on the way to Berlin for Christmas). For a couple of days stairs were really painful. It settled down a bit, but the niggle was well and truly back.

As well as the recces I spent a lot of time pampering my feet, memorising the route and eating. 

All year I’d had problems with the balls of my feet blistering towards the end of 100+ mile races. I knew I couldn’t manage 3-4 days with feet in that state so I had to stop it happening in the first place. I adopted a nightly ‘foot care’ routine: removing the dry skin with a (pink...) pedi-egg (far more effective than anything else, even the over-priced ‘Micro pedi for men’) and then smothering them with E45 cream. While I sorted the hard skin on my soles out, I screwed up on the toe-nail front (TMI warning). My toe-nails are a bit battered and often need trimming around the edges to stop bits growing into the surrounding skin. And on one of them I got it wrong, leaving a sore, slightly pussy toe. Normally this would sort itself out in a few days, but not if I was going to marinade it in bog-water for ~20 hours a day.

Memorising the route sounds batshit insane, but that’s sort of what I tried to do (my head is really good at storing pointless information). I knew I’d be close to the time-limit so wouldn’t have time to spare for navigation issues. I bought all 3 Pennine way guidebooks and read them repeatedly. Most evenings I ran through the route in my head while looking at the map and with my eyes closed. I also made a file for each stage with a summary of the tricky bits and maps (nabbed from one of the guidebooks) with the locations of shops and cafes in the towns.

Thanks to my farming genes, at 158 cm and 60 kg, I’m not exactly stereotypical runner shape. With hard training for Summer 100s I’m secretly happy when my weight drifts down to 57 kg. However below that I tend to get a bit fragile, so my aim was to go into the Spine with weight to burn (literally). Having lost weight on my recces, I spent Christmas eating everything in sight to get back up to my usual 60 kg.

As race day approached I wasn’t exactly brimming with confidence, due to my knee, the wet conditions under-foot and a nasty looking weather forecast. But the plan was to take it day by day and keep going as long as I was on course to meet the cut-offs and (mostly) having fun.
 

 
 

2014

I don’t (yet...) have many plans for 2014 beyond the Spine Race. And the goal there isn’t ‘to finish’. Because that might be beyond me, and choosing to DNF might be the best outcome. Instead the plan is to ‘make good decisions’, and (in order of priority):
  1. stay safe,
  2. have fun
  3. jog into Kirk Yetholm in the early hours of Saturday morning in the style of Mick Cooper (last year’s 2nd place finisher).

Beyond the Spine I’ve entered the Thames 184 at the end of Summer, and I’ll probably do something ‘big’ in between, I’m just not sure what. Maybe Hardmoors 110 or another 24 hour track race.
